Night exterior Fitzgerald's after closing. Peter is walking past the door. Cut to interior Assumpta is attempting to clean up. Glasses litter every surface. Peter enters, takes off his jacket, collar, and begins to roll up his sleeves. Music is playing softly.
A: Sorry Peter you've missed last orders.
P: Looks like you could use a skivvy.
He begins to stack glasses on the bar.
A: What are you doing?
P: Training for another job in case the bottom drops out of God Bothering.
Later bar is clean, last things being put away.
A: Would you like a drink?
P: Just a large one.
A: Close that door would you, or we'll have Ambrose over here with his book.
Peter closes the door. Only one light is still on music playing softly. They are sitting on adjoining stools. Peter smiles
P: That song, always one of my favorites at the dances.
A: I didn't know you liked to dance.
P: Love to.
A: You've been here two years, I've never seen you dance.
P: I haven't since I became a Priest.
A: Why not?
P: Guess it's the collar, puts people off, they forget I'm human.
A: Would you like to dance Peter?
Peter pauses, then smiles.
P: Yes, Assumpta I would.
As he puts his hand on her waist he suddenly looks as if he has had a shock. He takes her hand in his and they begin to slow dance. A look passes between them. The song ends they just stand there. Another song begins they continue to dance, closer. He is looking very intently at her.

Day interior Fitzgerald's kitchen Assumpta is at the table, Niamh enters.
N: You're looking very bright this morning.
A: Why shouldn't I be?

Interior Fitzgerald's day kitchen, Assumpta is cooking Peter enters wearing clerical collar.
P: I came to apologize for last night.
A: You didn't need to apolo...Oh, I see, we're back to Father Clifford, are we.
P: Partly, even if I wasn't I had no right.
A: You didn't exactly force yourself on me.

Several weeks later, Interior Niamh's kitchen
N: So you've made up your mind.
A: No, London.
Brian has rented Peter's house to tourists. Interior Fitzgerald's Brendan, Siobhan, Padraig, Niamh, Assumpta, and Leo. A now homeless Peter enters.
S: They're married Father.
L: Your advice finally paid off.
P: You couldn't have chosen a better man, congratulations, Niamh, I won't be taking that room after all.
Exterior Peter is changing car battery.
A: We didn't really get a chance to talk back
P: There isn't much left to say is there?

P: You don't even wait for me to come back from retreat.

A: Is there somewhere private we can talk?

Cut to interior sacristy, Peter angry closes door.
A: Things aren't what they seem Peter.
A: The marriage to Leo, we filed for an anullment the next day.
P:(confused) I don't understand.
A: Because he's a very good friend.
P: Am I missing something here?
A: After you left for retreat I went to see Michael, it seems we overlooked something in the decision making.
P: What are you talking about.
A: I'm pregnant!

P: That's wonderful!
A: It didn't seem so wondeful sitting here alone, waiting for you to make up your mind. I love this town and I didn't want to have to leave. But I grew up here. Being the Publician's doughter was hard enough. I kept imagining what it would be like being the Publician's illegitimate.....
He takes her in his arms.
P: I'm so sorry, why didn't you call me.
A: Fr Mac wouldn't tell where you were.
Both close to tears.
P: How did Leo come into this?
A: I called him, told him about the baby.
P: Does he know about us?
A: No, he said I should go to London, we'd get married in the Registry office, I'd get the certificate, next day we filed for an anullment. He took a couple of weeks off. We were supposed to come here the happy couple, things go wrong, off he goes, no one the wiser.
P: He's a good friend. But I wish you had waited for me. I've already notified the Bishop that I'm leaving the church..

P: We're going to have a baby.
A: A very complicated baby.
P: Everything is going to work out. I've always wanted to have children.
A: You're going to stay at Fitzgerald's now aren't you?
P: Do you think that is wise?
Interior Fitzgerald's night after closing Leo is at top of stairs watching Peter and Assumpta talking in chairs by fire. Cut to interior Fitzgerald's day Peter and Michael are talking.
M: I didn't know you were interested in astronomy.
P: It's what I studied at University.
M: I have a friend in Dublin, maybe I should speak to him.
P: Thank you Michael I'd appreciate that.
Cut to Leo in shadows as Assumpta walks past --Cut to kitchen Leo handing Peter a crying Keiran.
L: How are you with babies Father.
P: As good as the next man.
L: A bit better than that I think. I'm on a hiding to nothing would you say.
P: What are we talking about here Leo.
L: Unless you tell me otherwise I'm just the boy come to tidy your little mess.
Leo exits, Assumpta enters.
A: You're a natural.
P: Have you said something to Leo?
P: I think we better.
Cut to exterior Fitzgerald's Leo driving away. Cut to interior Assumpta on phone.
A: Is your mother very poorly?
P: I'm afraid so. They want me home right away. I don't know how long I'll be gone, but please don't marry anyone else while I'm gone.
A: Do you need a ride to Cilldargen?
P: I'd like that.
Day interior Fitzgerald's kitchen making sure not to be over heard.
A: How are you?
P: It's very difficult, I don't suppose you could come for the funeral.
A: I'll ask Niamh to take over.
Day exterior cemetery Peter in suit holding Assumpta's hand walking.
P: I told my mother about us, our plans.
A: That must have been awfully hard.
P: She was very pleased. She wanted more time so she could know you and the baby.
A: She sounds wonderful.
P: She was, we better hurry we have a long over due appointment.

B: Certainly is quiet around here with both
Peter and Assumpta gone, has anyone heard anything new?
M: I had a letter from Peter.
S: When's he coming home?
M: I don't know that he will.
B: Why not?
M: He's left the church.
B: I'm not surprised.
S: I always thought he and Assumpta might get together someday. Niamh have you heard from her lately?
N: Just the call last week.
P: If Peter's not a Priest anymore what's he gong to do?
M: He's taken a position at University in Dublin.
Interior Fitzgerald's kitchen Niamh and Assumpta are talking.
A: I have something important to tell you.
A: I've been trying to think of a way to bring it up ever since I got back.
A: Don't go crazy.

N: Oh my...that's wonderful. When?

N: You two are going to try again aren't you?

Exterior day car drives up Peter gets out removes bags Brendan cycles up, they embrace.
B: Peter welcome back.
P: Brendan it's good to see you.
B: Hope you're home for good.
P: Just weekends for now unfortunately, have to make a living, how's everyone?
B: Well, you know BallyKay, a beehive of activity.
Interior Fitzgerald's Brendan and Peter enter, Brendan joins Siobhan and Padraig at bar, Peter stands at desk Assumpta goes over visibly pregnant
B: Did you ever know two people with worse timing?
PA: Well they do top the list.
S: It's good to see you Peter, are you back to stay?
P: Only weekends for now, let me put my things away, then I'll buy the pints.

Later Assumpta's bedroom. Assumpta sitting up, Peter sitting on side of bed holding new baby. The usuals enter- congratulations, let me see him, how're you feeling, oh he's so lovely, what are you calling him?
P: We've been keeping a secret. But it's time to let our friends know. Assumpta and I were married after I left the church (everyone stares, then smiles) now we'd like to have you meet our son. This is Bradley Fitzgerald Clifford.
