The (altered) Reckoning
by Jen Jackson (and the very wonderful Stewart Jackson)
Peter and Assumpta have just had their talk on the beach, and, feelings finally
revealed, are on the bus back to BallyK. FADE OUT
LATER THAT AFTERNOON; ASSUMPTA IS IN HER SOLICITOR'S OFFICE. THE SOLICITOR,
SHANE, IS A MIDDLE AGED MAN, WHO HAS KNOWN ASSUMPTA SINCE HER MOTHER'S DEATH.
HE HAS HANDLED ALL OF THE LEGAL BUSINESS FOR FITZGERALD'S.
Assumpta: Look, I don't want to hurt Leo, I just want this settled fast.
I never should have married him in the first place. I guess I just wasn't
thinking straight.
Shane: I understand that Assumpta, but I still think you should push for
an annulment, you may well want to have the option of marrying in the church
someday.
Assumpta: (near tears) Sure, and what cause would I have for an annulment?
I think the church would require more than "Oh, I don't really love him, I
was just trying to get over the feelings I had for the Priest, who, by the
way decided to leave the church to be with me". Can't we just leave it at
irreconcilable differences and call it a day?
Shane: (leaning forward and placing his hand on hers in an attempt to comfort
her) Assumpta, it's going to be o.k. I'll file the papers first thing tomorrow.
If you change your mind, we can always try for an annulment later.
FADE TO PETER IN FR. MAC'S OFFICE, SAME DAY. PETER LOOKS NERVOUS, BUT DETERMINED.
FR. MAC LOOKS TIRED, AND DEFEATED.
Fr. Mac: Are you sure about this Peter?
Peter: I've never been more sure about anything in my life.
Fr. Mac: (sighs) You were a good Priest, Peter. Not MY kind of Priest, but
a good one just the same. I hope you will continue to be involved in the church
in some way.
Peter: Of course I will.
Fr. Mac: (chuckles) How does Assumpta feel about that?
Peter: (a little defensive) She would never stand in the way of my happiness.
Fr. Mac: (smiling) No, you're right. She's a fiery one, (sigh) but I see
the way she looks at you. She'd never let you be unhappy. I'll call the Bishop
and set things in motion. I'll ask that you continue your duties through Sunday
mass. You can announce your decision to the congregation then.
Peter: Sure, uh, how long will it take to find a new curate, do you think?
Fr. Mac: I shouldn't think it will take more than a week, it never has before
(flashes a somewhat wicked smile) I'm sorry to do this to you, but I will
need you to find alternate accommodations.
Peter: Of course. I'll have my things out by Monday. You'll let me know
if you need me out sooner?
Fr. Mac: No, no. That will be fine. As long as you don't plan on moving
into the rectory this time. (smiles and stands, Peter stands as well and
the two men shake hands.)
Fr. Mac: Good luck to you both.
Peter: Thanks. (leaves Fr. Mac's office)
FADE TO ASSUMPTA BEHIND THE BAR, DRYING A GLASS, LOOKING VERY PREOCCUPIED.
PADRAIG AND BRENDAN ARE EATING THEIR SANDWICHES.
Padraig: Assumpta, do you think I could have that pint now, or should I
come back for it tomorrow?
Assumpta seems to snap out of her trance.
Assumpta: Oh, right, sorry. (tops off his pint and hands it to him.)
Peter enters the pub, looks around, sees Padraig and Brendan, meets Assumpta's
eyes and smiles.
Peter: Assumpta, a word please. (walks into the kitchen)
Assumpta: (to Padraig and Brendan) Watch the pub will you? (walks into the
kitchen)
Brendan and Padraig: Yeah, sure. (they look at each other and grin, looking
like kids in the candy shop.)
PETER AND ASSUMPTA IN THE KITCHEN, BOTH LOOKING NERVOUS.
Peter: Fr. Mac's calling the Bishop today. I'll need to fulfill my duties
until Sunday, but I'll announce that I'm leaving the priesthood after Mass.
(Assumpta looks noticeably relaxed, smiles) He actually took it pretty well;
actually seemed happy for us. (smiles) How did things go on your end?
Assumpta: My solicitor said he'd file the papers first thing in the morning.
He tried to talk me into trying for an annulment, but I just want this over
as fast as possible. I'm sorry, I hope you don't mind that it will be a divorce
instead of an annulment.
Peter: Assumpta, I'd like to have had the option to marry you in the church
someday, but this is your decision. You need to do what you think is best.
Assumpta: I know, and I'm sorry I took that option from you. It just seems
deceitful to try for an annulment because I made a stupid, rash decision to
keep from being alone! Oh, god, Peter, I've made such a mess of my life! (crying
now)
Peter takes Assumpta in his arms, kisses the top of her head.
Peter: Shhh, it's o.k.; everything is going to be o.k. (stroking her hair)
None of this matters now, I just want to be with you and see you happy.
FADE TO SUNDAY, PETER'S LAST MASS, AND DAY OF THE FOOD FAIR.
INT. ST. JOSEPH'S; PETER IS STANDING AT THE FRONT OF THE CHURCH, LOOKING
AT THE CONGREGATION
Peter: Before we leave here today, I have an announcement. I want to thank
you all for welcoming me into your parish and your community. (we see Assumpta
standing in the back of the church, unnoticed by the congregation, but Peter
sees her and smiles) I hope that you will continue to think of me as your
friend and neighbor. Today will be my last day as your curate. I have decided,
after much contemplation, and prayer, to leave the priesthood. (flash to Niamh
looking shocked and a bit angry) I'm sure I will see you all later at Fitzgerald's
for our community food fair. God bless and keep you all.
(Peter starts down the aisle. Music starts several seconds after as Kathleen
is in shock; Assumpta slips out of the church just before Peter reaches the
door. The congregation, still in a bit of shock, take longer than usual to
start out of the church. Assumpta is waiting for Peter as he comes out.)
Peter: Thank you for coming. It means a lot to me.
Assumpta: I just wanted to be there, in case you needed me. I better go
before the others come out; we can't give them the second shock of seeing
me coming out of the church. They'll be sure judgment day is upon us! (she
squeezes his hand and he smiles, she's half way down the street before the
first parishioner comes out. Several parishioners stop and wish Peter well,
Niamh and Ambrose (carrying Kieran) are the last to leave.)
Niamh approaches Peter.
Niamh: How can you do this? You promised me you'd christen Kieran!
(Ambrose is standing next to her, but not nearly as upset, he just seems
a little confused)
Peter: Niamh, I'm sorry. I couldn't put this off any longer. I can't explain
right now.
Niamh: You can't explain!?! What am I supposed to do now? You've left me
totally in a lurch here.
Peter: Fr. Mac will take over the christening, you don't need to worry about
changing the date or anything.
Niamh: (sounding like a spoiled child) I don't want Fr. Mac, I want you!
Peter: (losing patience now) Niamh, I'm sorry. I know you're disappointed,
but I need to have a chance at happiness myself. I will always be here for
you, and Ambrose and Kieran, just not as your Priest. (walks away, into the
church, Niamh stomps off toward the Garda house, followed by a bewildered
Ambrose and crying Kieran)
FADE TO PETER STRAIGHTENING THE CHURCH, BLOWING OUT THE CANDLES, ETC. HE
REMOVES HIS COLLAR AND SETS IT ON THE ALTAR.
FADE TO FITZGERALD'S, NIGHT OF THE FOOD FAIR, PETER HAS JUST RECEIVED HIS
TROPHY FOR HIS ENTRY IN THE CONTEST.
Peter: Assumpta, a word please.
Assumpta: Sure.
(They move to an empty corner of the bar)
Peter: I love you.
Assumpta: (blushing) Careful, if anyone hears you, Fr. Mac will have a stroke!
Peter: I don't care, I can't help myself!
(lights go out and flicker back on, we see that Peter is holding Assumpta's
hand) lights go out again.)
Padraig: I'll get it Assumpta, you keep pulling pints.
Assumpta: No, no, it's my pub, I'll take care of it.
(Assumpta goes to the basement, the lights come back on. Cheers erupt from
the pub, then the lights go back out, and we hear a crash. Peter, Michael,
Padraig and Brendan rush down the stairs to find Assumpta lying on the floor,
motionless. Michael tries to find a pulse.)
Michael: Brendan, can you perform CPR?
(Siobhan, Brian and Fr. Mac in the basement now)
Brendan: Yeah.
Michael: (starting the compression end of CPR) Niamh! Call for an ambulance,
tell them we need a cardiac!
(they work on Assumpta for several minutes, Niamh rushes back down the steps)
Niamh: They'll be here in 5 minutes!
Peter: (panicked and in tears) Assumpta, don't leave me.
(the others are watching Peter's reaction, putting the pieces together,
Siobhan puts her arm around Peter, trying to comfort him)
Michael: I've got a pulse! It's weak, but she's not ready to give up yet.
FADE OUT TO ASSUMPTA BEING LOADED INTO THE AMBULANCE, PETER GETS IN WITH
HER.
ROLL CREDITS
Part Two: SECOND CHANCES
MICHAEL AND PETER ARE JUST OUTSIDE ASSUMPTA'S ROOM AT THE HOSPITAL. PETER
IS LEANING ON THE DOOR JAMB, HEAD DOWN.
Michael: She's had a major jolt, and when she fell, she hit her head pretty
hard. She may be unconscious for a while. If she makes it through the night,
she stands a good chance of a full recovery. You really should get some rest.
Can I give you a lift home?
Peter: No, I'm staying.
Michael: There's nothing you can do for her Peter...
Peter: (cutting Michael off) I don't care, I can't just leaver her here.
Michael: (hand on Peter's shoulder) I'll see if I can get some extra blankets
and pillows for you.
Peter: Thanks...For everything.
FADE TO PETER SITTING BY ASSUMPTA'S BED, SHE HAS IV'S AND OXYGEN, STACK
OF BLANKETS AND PILLOWS, UNTOUCHED, ON THE CHAIR NEXT TO HIM. (in the background,
Sarah McLaughlan's "hold on") HE'S HOLDING HER HAND, IN BOTH OF HIS, HEAD
DOWN. HE DOESN'T NOTICE THAT HER EYES FLUTTERED OPEN FOR JUST A SECOND. THEY
CLOSE AGAIN JUST BEFORE HE LOOKS UP AT HER. THE SUN IS JUST STARTING TO RISE
OVER BALLYKISSANGEL.
FADE TO NIAMH HOLDING A FUSSY KIERAN, PACING THE KITCHEN. AMBROSE IS AT
THE TABLE READING THE PAPER.
Niamh: This is Peter's fault.
Ambrose: (confused) What are you on about?
Niamh: Assumpta could die and it's his fault!
Ambrose: How can you say that? It was an accident. That fuse box has been
trouble for months now, it was just a matter of time before someone got hurt,
or the whole place burned down. How can you blame that on Peter?
Niamh: She's the reason he left the church, are you blind now? Don't you
see how they've been looking at each other? God is punishing him by taking
her away from him!
Ambrose: (throws down the paper) So what if she is the reason he left the
church? They are our friends. If they ARE trying to start a life together,
shouldn't we be supportive? And as for this daft idea that that God would
punish Peter by taking Assumpta; that thought is more sinful than anything
Peter has done! What's becoming of you?
(Niamh sits down in the chair and cries)
FADE TO LATE AFTERNOON-HOSPITAL ROOM. PETER HAS FALLEN ASLEEP. BRENDAN WALKS
IN, SITS DOWN BESIDE HIM CAREFUL NOT TO WAKE HIM, AND WATCHES ASSUMPTA. PETER
STIRRS, BLINKS AND SEES HIS FRIEND SITTING NEXT TO HIM.
Brendan: You look awful.
Peter: Thanks, mate. Good to see you too.
Brendan: (smiling) have you eaten at all today?
Peter: No, I'm not hungry.
Brendan: Right. I'll go find you a sandwich. (stands to leave)
Peter: I'd rather have a pint. (smiles for the first time since the lights
went out at Fitzgerald's)
Brendan: Wouldn't be worth it. Nobody pulls a pint like herself. (leaves
to find a sandwich)
(Peter sits, holding her hand, just watching)
(Michael walks in a few minutes later)
Michael: Oh, you're awake.
Peter: Why, what did I miss?
Michael: Well, she hasn't woken up yet, but her vitals are looking much
better. Her pulse is strong, but then if anyone could pull through this,
it would be Assumpta.
(Brendan has returned, sandwich and cup of tea in hand, and has heard most
of what Michael has said)
Brendan: That's our girl, always has been a force to be reckoned with. (hands
the sandwich and tea to Peter)
Peter: Thanks, I think I could do with a bite after all.
Michael: I've got a few more patients to see before I leave. I guess you'll
be wanting to stay here again tonight.
Peter: I'm not leaving 'till she does.
Michael: That's what I thought. I've already asked the nurse to have a cot
sent in for you. I'll have her bring something to help you sleep a little
later.
(Peter starts to protest, Michael holds up his hand to stop him)
Michael: Something very mild, if she wakes up, you'll hear if she calls
to you.
Peter: Fair enough.
(Michael leaves the room, Brendan sits down again and looks at Peter.)
Brendan: You love her, don't you.
(Peter nods)
Brendan: I don't think that will come as a surprise to anyone. It's been
pretty obvious for a while now. You'll be good for her, Peter. And, God knows
she'll be good for you. (nudges his friend's shoulder affectionately.)
Peter: Brendan, I've been such a fool! We've wasted so much time.
Brendan: No point in thinking about that now, just focus on your future.
And, if you break her heart, I'll break your neck. (smiling) I'm going to
head home; can I bring you anything when I come back tomorrow?
Peter: Brendan, I hate to ask, it's just that I don't want to leave her...
Brendan: Ask anyway.
Peter: I have to vacate my house, the new curate will be arriving this week...
Brendan: Say no more. I'll pack your things up tonight, drink the last of
your beer, and take everything to my house. You can stay with me as long as
you like.
Peter: (hands Brendan his keys) Thank you. I may need to stay at the pub
if Assumpta needs me, when she comes home that is.
Brendan: Don't worry, she'll be barring Brian again in no time.
FADE OUT TO NIAMH, CLEANING UP THE PUB, AMBROSE WALKS IN.
Ambrose: Need help?
Niamh: No, I'm fine. (still wiping down the bar, won't look at Ambrose)
Ambrose: Niamh, I'm sorry. I know this is hard for you, I just don't want
to see a lifelong friendship with Assumpta ruined because you feel like Peter
let you down.
Niamh: Peter DID let me down. He let US down, Kieran too.
Ambrose: (puts his hand on Niamh's to stop her from wiping the bar) Niamh,
look at me. (she looks up, eyes red, still wet with tears) You've always said
you wanted Assumpta to be happy. You know Peter can give her that. He was
a good priest Niamh, but it just wasn't the right thing for him. He really
isn't cut out for that kind of solitary existence. So he won't be christening
Kieran, can't we ask him to stand as GodFather instead?
Niamh: (crying now) I'm just so worried about her. (Ambrose comes around
the bar and takes her in his arms) you're right about Peter, he is a good
man, he deserves some happiness of his own. I wanted Assumpta to stand as
GodMother anyway; maybe we could have a two in one wedding/christening. (laughs
a tear filled laugh)
Ambrose: That'd never work. With both you and Assumpta busy with the big
day, how could we have Fitzgerald's cater? (they share a smile at that and
kiss)
FADE OUT TO BRENDAN CARRYING BOXES FROM PETER'S HOUSE, LOADING THEM INTO
SIOBHAN'S TRUCK. IT IS JUST ABOUT SUNSET.
Siobhan: No idea when she'll be home then?
Brendan: Won't know, until she wakes up; (heaving a box into the truck)
for his sake, I hope it's soon. Poor man's dead on his feet.
Siobhan: Well, when she does come home, I can help him with her, I'll just
work my calls on a tighter schedule, that's all.
Brendan: Yeah, I figure I'll talk to Niamh about taking some of the night
shifts behind the bar so she's not away from Ambrose and Kieran so much. Peter
will want to tend to Assumpta, he doesn't need to worry about the pub as
well.
Siobhan: (closing the back of the truck) Be sure you don't drink all the
profits then.
Brendan: Just 2 pints a night. but I'll bet she'll make sure she always
has my usual on tap from here out.
AS THEY GET INTO THE TRUCK TO TAKE THE BOXES TO BRENDAN'S, FADE OUT TO THE
HOSPITAL. PETER IS ASLEEP ON THE COT THE NURSES BROUGHT. ASSUMPTA GROANS,
EYES FLUTTERING A BIT. PETER IS UP INSTANTLY AND RUSHES TO HER SIDE.
Peter: Assumpta, I'm here. Wake up love. (more groaning, her eyes finally
open)
Assumpta: Peter, what are you doing in my room?
Peter: This isn't your room, you're in the hospital.
Assumpta: My head is pounding! (closes eyes again)
Peter: Don't go back to sleep, I need you to stay awake for me. (she opens
her eyes again) That's my girl. You've had a bit of an accident. I'll tell
you all about it, just let me call Michael first and let him know you're awake.
FADE OUT TO AMBROSE AND NIAMH FINISHING UP AT THE PUB. IT'S QUITE LATE AND
THEY ARE WORKING BY CANDLELIGHT SINCE THE POWER HASN'T BEEN FIXED YET.
Niamh: Well, that's it then, we'll be ready as soon as Padraig gets the
electric fixed. He's planning on starting tomorrow, should only take a couple
of days, I suppose.
Ambrose: How'd he get the money for supplies? I thought Assumpta didn't
have it to spare.
Niamh: Siobhan's been taking a collection. We still fell a little short,
but Dad was able to work a deal for us with the supplier.
Ambrose; Um, is this a deal I want to know about?
Niamh: Probably not. (blows out the last of the candles and they head to
the door) but I'm sure he's told Kieran all about it while we were cleaning
up.
Ambrose: Great, soon I'll have the two of them to worry over.
FADE OUT TO THE HOSPITAL; MICHAEL IS LISTENING TO ASSUMPTA'S HEART WHILE
PETER HOLDS HER HAND.
Michael: I think we can move you to a regular room. Now, maybe you can convince
this one (nods to Peter) to go home and get some rest.
Assumpta: (to Peter) Have you been here the whole time?
Peter: Well, I couldn't just leave you here!
Assumpta: Peter, I'm fine now, go home.
Michael: (half whispers to Peter) I wouldn't cross her if I were you.
(smile)
Peter: (sighs) Fine! But I'll be back first thing tomorrow.
Michael: I'll give you a lift home, just let me see about moving her to
a regular room first.
Peter: Thanks Michael. I'll just wait with Assumpta 'till you're ready.
(Michael leaves the room)
Peter: Assumpta, there's something I need to say before I leave. (takes
her hand, looking into her eyes) We have wasted so much time, and I know
that's been my doing, but I can't wait to do this any longer. I almost lost
you, and I can't stand to even think of my life with out you. Assumpta, will
you marry me? As soon as we're both free to marry that is.
(Assumpta reaches for him, draws him toward her, and kisses him very softly.
Peter: (whispers) Is that a yes?
Assumpta: (smiles) You're so perceptive.
(Michael and 3 orderlies enter the room)
Michael: Good news! They've got a room for you. We can get you settled in
before we leave. (the orderlies wheel the bed and monitors out of the room,
Michael and Peter follow)
Michael: She'll be O.K. now. We just need to keep her another day or so.
She may be very weak for a while.
Peter: I'll stay in one of the pub rooms when she comes home so I can take
care of her.
Michael: She's more than just a good friend to you, isn't she Peter.
Peter: I lover her Michael, so much that I can't bear to be without her.
(looks a little embarrassed) We haven't done anything improper, but I did
leave the church to be with her.
Michael: I'll not judge you Peter. You both deserve the best life has to
offer.
Peter: I hope the rest of the town can be that understanding.
Michael: Most will, some may take a little time to win over. (they arrive
at Assumpta's new room) Come on, give her a kiss goodnight so we can get you
home.
Peter: I'll be staying at Brendan's for a while, can you drop me there?
(Michael nods)
FADE TO PETER KNOCKING ON BRENDAN'S DOOR. BRENDAN OPENS; PADRAIG AND SIOBHAN
IN LIVING ROOM DRINKING.
Brendan: Peter! She's awake then?
Peter: She came to a couple of hours ago. Michael says she's doing well.
They're just going to keep her there for a couple more days, just to be sure,
but it looks like she's going to be fine.
Siobhan: You should go get some sleep Peter. I suppose you'll want to take
care of her yourself once she gets home, so you'll need to be well rested.
Peter: Yeah. Oh, Brendan, I'd like to leave most of my things here if that's
o.k., but I'll probably stay with her for a bit, until she's able to look
after herself.
Brendan: That's fine, you go on up to bed, I'll keep this lot quiet so you
can sleep.
Siobhan: I was just about to leave myself.
Padraig: Well, I guess there's no point in me staying, if I have to keep
quiet.
Peter: Thanks. um, would you mind waking me before you leave in the morning?
I want to get back to the hospital first. thing.
Brendan: Sure.
(Peter heads up the stairs, Siobhan and Padraig head out the door)
FADE OUT TO LEO, HOLDING DIVORCE PAPERS, LOOKING VERY ANGRY. HE STORMS OUT
OF HIS FLAT AND GETS INTO HIS CAR AND SPEEDS OFF.
FADE OUT, EARLY THE NEXT MORNING. LEO IS BANGING ON THE PUB DOOR, NIAMH
IS OUT WALKING WITH KIERAN, WHO WOKE HER UP VERY EARLY. SHE CROSSES THE STREET.
Niamh: Leo, she's not there.
Leo: (yelling) Where is she!?
(Ambrose, in uniform, just leaving the Guarda house, sees the commotion,
crosses the street and stands beside Niamh, arm around her shoulders)
Ambrose: Leo, I'll need you to calm down before we tell you anything.
Leo: (teeth clenched) Tell me where she is! She's still my wife, for the
time being, (waving the divorce papers) whether she likes it or not!
Ambrose: Again, I'll tell you nothing until you've calmed down. Niamh, why
don't you take Kieran into the house, I'll handle this.
FADE OUT TO PETER STANDING AT THE MADONNA STATUE, QUIETLY CONTEMPLATING
THE ERRANDS HE NEEDS TO DO BEFORE GOING TO THE HOSPITAL. LEO SPEEDING PAST,
SEES HIM AND STOPS, GETS OUT OF THE CAR.
Leo: Planning your next conquest with a married woman, Father?
Peter: Leo, I'm in no mood for you just now.
Leo: Oh, has my wife upset you, nearly dying and all? Perhaps she's being
punished for carrying on with a Catholic Priest.
Peter: (angry now, growls) Enough, Leo!
Leo: Is this where you took her? Did you have her right there, behind the
statue? (Peter punches Leo, just as Niamh is driving by. Leo lunges at Peter
as Niamh is getting out of her car.
Niamh: STOP IT! BOTH OF YOU! (moves to get between them, Leo shoves here
away, she falls to the ground and Peter tackles Leo, knocking him flat on
his back, taking the wind out of him, and rushes to Niamh to help her up and
see if she's o.k.)
Peter: Very manly of you Leo, knocking the Guarda's wife down.
Niamh: Peter, don't goad him, you'll only make things worse. Leo, I'd leave
if I were you, Ambrose won't hesitate to charge you when he hears of this.
Leo: You'll rot in hell, Father. (in a venomous tone)
Peter: Niamh, I'm sorry you were dragged into this. Are you O.K.?
Niamh: I'm fine. Besides, I wasn't dragged, I threw myself in willingly.
(smiles) I'm on my way to see Assumpta. Were you heading there yourself?
Peter: Yeah, I have a couple of errands to run on the way, maybe you could
give me a hand?
FADE TO PETER IN CILLDARGAN, SELLING HIS CAR. GETS INTO NIAMH'S CAR AND
THEY PULL UP OUTSIDE A JEWELRY STORE. FADE TO PETER SLIPPING THE VELVET BOX
INTO HIS POCKET. NIAMH SMILES AT HIM AND GIVES HIM A HUG.
Niamh: Assumpta's the closest thing I have to a sister. Welcome to the family
Peter.
FADE OUT TO THE HOSPITAL, LEO STANDING BY ASSUMPTA'S BED, HOLDING THE DIVORCE
PAPERS.
Assumpta: Leo, I'm sorry. I never meant to hurt you. You know as well as
I that this just wasn't working.
Leo: The only reason it wasn't working between us is that you've been in
love with the Priest! You never gave us a chance. You've reached a new low,
Assumpta. When did you become such a tart?
(Michael walks in, clears his throat)
Michael: Leo, I'll have to ask you to leave, she's in no condition to take
this verbal beating from you.
Leo: Fine! She's not worth my time anyway. (signs the papers and throws
them at Assumpta) He's making a fool of you, you know. He won't choose you
over his church!
Michael: Ah, you're wrong there Leo, he already has. Now, will you be leaving
on your own, or will I be calling security?
(Leo gives Assumpta one last look of disgust and storms out)
(Michael taking Assumpta's blood pressure)
Michael: Well, that episode did you no good. Let's get you calmed down a
bit. Just put that little scene out of your mind.
Assumpta: Easier said than done, Michael. He's right. I never did give us
a chance. The moment we came back to Ballyk and I saw Peter, I knew I had
made the biggest mistake of my life. I had no right to offer Leo hope like
that.
Michael: He'd have been hurt either way. If you had refused to marry him,
he'd probably be mostly over it by now. All you did was prolong the outcome.
Try to relax a bit, I'll come back later to check your blood pressure again,
and I expect it to be normal next time!
Assumpta: yes Dr. (rolling her eyes)
FADE OUT TO PADRAIG IN THE CELLAR OF THE PUB, WORKING ON THE ELECTRIC. BRENDAN
IS HOLDING A PORTABLE LIGHT SHINING ON THE FUSE BOX.
Padraig: I've got a couple of cars to work on this morning, but I should
be able to finish this up in the afternoon. It was easier than I expected.
Brendan: I'll let Niamh know she can open for lunch tomorrow. I'm sure Assumpta
can't afford to loose much more business than she already has.
Padraid: The electric's only half of what this place needs. I'm surprised
it hasn't fallen down around her ears by now. (Brendan looks at his watch)
Brendan: Can you give me a lift, I'll be late for class.
FADE TO PETER AND NIAMH ENTERING ASSUMPTA'S HOSPITAL ROOM. ASSUMPTA IS SLEEPING,
THEY SIT DOWN QUIETLY TO WAIT FOR HER TO WAKE UP. SHE WAKES SHORTLY AFTER
THEY SIT DOWN.
Peter: Hiya.
Assumpta: Hmm, i thought you were coming first thing; I've already had a
visitor.
Niamh: It's only 10:30. Who's been here and left already?
Assumpta: Leo.
Peter: Great. I've had a run in with him myself already this morning.
Niamh: (fussing) Oh, just forget about him! We're a bit late because Peter
had some errands to run, (nudges Peter) didn't you?
Peter: (clears his throat and looks at Niamh) Well, yeah. I had thought
I'd make things a little more official. (pulls the ring box out of his pocket)
Assumpta, I know I've already asked you this, but just to be sure you haven't
changed your mind; (takes her hand and gets down on one knee and opens the
box) Will you please marry me?
Assumpta: Aw, you know I will. (Peter takes the gold Claddagh ring from
the box and places it on her left hand, ring finger, with the crown facing
in)
ROLL CREDITS
Part 3: HOME IS WHERE YOU ARE
Early morning, Peter is driving Assumpta's van, turns into Hospital Parking
lot. Gets out, grabs bag and runs into the hospital. Running down the hall,
stops but nearly slides past Assumpta's room. She's sitting on the edge of
the bed waiting for him.
Assumpta: Well, I didn't mean for you to get here in record time-I just
said "as soon as you can".
Peter: Hey, when the woman I love tells me to get to her as fast as I can,
I don't waste any time. (smiles and kisser, then hands her the bag.)
Assumpta: Right. That's a wise move! (takes bag) As soon as I get dressed,
we can get out of here. I think they'll want to wheel me out, can you let
the nurse know I'm just about ready?
Peter: You bet.
Assumpta: I love a man that can follow orders.(gives him a wicked smile
and pulls the curtain around the bed so she can change. Peter goes to find
the nurse, Michael is at the nurses station, filling out paperwork)
Michael: Oh good, you're here. That was quick.
Peter: (blushing) Um, yeah. I got here as quick as I could.
Michael: (smiles but then turns serious) I know you're excited, but I need
to go over some ground rules for her, and, knowing Assumpta, I'll need you
to enforce them.
Peter: I'll do whatever it takes to make sure she follows your orders.
(they walk to Assumpta's room, enter, she's sitting on the edge of the bed,
dressed and looking eager to leave)
Michael: Ah, I see you're ready to go.
Assumpta: Yeah, let's make this quick, yeah. I've got a pub to run.
Michael: About that, Peter has given me his word that he'll make sure you
follow my orders.
(Assumpta groans and rolls her eyes)
Michael: You are still weak and need rest. I'm only O.K. with you going
home because I know Niamh is handling the pub, with a little help from Brendan
and Siobhan. Peter will be in charge of you.
Assumpta: Are you sure he can be trusted? He has a thing for me you know.
Peter (blushing) I'll do what ever Michael says, and be a perfect gentleman
the entire time!
Michael: (looks at the two of them and smiles) Maybe I should have Siobhan
chaperone you two.
Assumpta: Siobhan? Chaperone! That's great, it's herself that's up the pole!
(they all have a laugh chiding their friend)
Michael: Seriously Assumpta, you may sit and enjoy the company in the pub,
but that's all. you are not to fix one sandwich, pull one pint or clear one
table. Understood?
Assumpta: Yes. (sigh) Can we go now?
Michael: (smiles) Not quite. Peter, she may have dizzy spells for a while.
Are you able to stay with her in case she needs help getting around?
Assumpta: Wait a minute! Did I say he could stay with me?
Peter: (smiles, sarcastically) What, I'm not welcome at Fitzgerald's? I'm
not technically the clergy anymore, so what's you're excuse now?
Assumpta: I didn't say you weren't welcome, I just wanted to be asked is
all.
Peter: (bows to her, sarcastically) Assumpta, love, may I please stay with
you (looks at Michael), in a spare room, of course, so that I may take care
of you and cater to your every whim, until you are well? (smiles a wicked
little smile)
Assumpta: (sigh) I suppose.
Michael: (rolls his eyes, to Assumpta) Get in the wheelchair, your ladyship.
(to Peter, puts his hand on Peter's shoulder) My sympathies. Call if you need
help. And, what I mean by that is, call someone else. (smiles as Peter wheels
Assumpta out into the hall, they are met by a nurse who escorts them the
rest of the way to the car)
Cut to Peter helping Assumpta into the car. he shuts the door, shakes the
nurses hand, smiles and gets into the car.
Peter: (looking at Assumpta, takes her hand) I'm so glad you're coming home.
(kisses her hand) Now, I expect you to be a good patient, let me take care
of you, and let Niamh take care of the pub. I don't want you wearing yourself
out and ending up back in hospital.
Assumpta: I'm actually looking forward to having you stay with me. As much
as I hate being the invalid, it'll be nice to have some time alone with you.
And, there's the added bonus of getting Kathleen all worked up!(laugh)
Fade to Niamh sweeping the walk in front of Fitzgerald's. Ambrose crosses
the street from the Guarda house, with Kieran in the pram.
Ambrose: Sorry love, I have to go to Cildargen and drop off some reports.
(kisses her)
Niamh: I'm just about through here anyway. Just want everything to look
nice when Assumpta comes home. (puts broom back in the pub) Come on Kieran,
let's go for our walk. (looks at Ambrose) We decided to close the pub for
lunch today, let Assumpta get settled in and all. Will you be home for lunch?
Ambrose: I'll try, if not, I'll stop in as soon as I can. Tell Assumpta
I'm glad she's home. (Ambrose gets in the guarda car, Niamh heads off on
her walk, waves as he drives by. She walks a little further, sees Brendan
on his bike, heading to school)
Niamh: Brendan! Assumpta's coming home today. Peter called early to tell
me he was on his way to pick her up.
Brendan: Great news Niamh! I can take some of the pub duties for you so
you can have a little more time with this one( nods at Kieran) and the husband.
If you can take the lunch shift, I can take the nights.
Niamh:Ah, thanks Brendan, That's a huge help. I'm sure Peter will pitch
in when he can, that's if Assumpta isn't running him off his feet! (smiles)
Fade to Peter and Assumpta pulling up in front of Fitzgerald's. Peter gets
out and helps her out of the van. keeping one arm around her as much for support
as for affection. He unlocks the door and they walk in. he puts his arms
around her waist and pulls her in for a tender kiss.
Peter; Welcome home. Why don't you sit down, I'll get a fire going and make
us some lunch.
Assumpta: I'm really fine....(Peter raises and eyebrow and gives her a look
that tells her to stop right there) fine. If you're set on taking care of
me, who am I to argue?
Fade to Siobhan in Kathleen's shop, making purchase.
Kathleen: (curtly) I see Mrs. McGarvey is home.
Siobhan: Hmm. I don't think Assumpta ever took Leo's name. (hands her money)
Kathleen: I suppose Fr. Clifford is planning on taking care of her; walked
in there with his arm around her, very cozy.
Siobhan: Funny, I could have sworn you were there when he announced that
he was leaving the priesthood. Were you not listening, or did you just forget?
(takes her purchase and leaves Kathleen standing there eyes wide, lips pursed
at having just been put in her place)
(Siobhan puts her purchase in her truck and walks across to the pub, knocks)
Assumpta: (from inside) We're closed!
Siobhan: I can see that ya daft dosser, I'm here to see if you need anything!
Assumpta: (from inside) Peter! Siobhan's at the door!
Peter: (from inside) Thanks, I couldn't have figured that out for myself.
Peter: Siobhan! Good to see you.
Siobhan: Well, I see she's back to her old self (smiles, goes over to Assumpta
and gives her a hug)
Siobhan: Don't you ever give us a scare like that again!
Assumpta: I know, I know. (rolls her eyes) I suppose I'm going to get this
"talking to" by each of you.
Siobhan: Well, maybe if it's said enough, you'll actually listen! (to Peter)
If you need to go out, just let me know, I can stay with Assumpta.
Peter: Thanks Siobhan, maybe you could stay for a while tomorrow? I'd like
to go into Cildargen and pick up some books and things to help Assumpta pass
the time, you she hates to sit still.
Siobhan: No problem. I'll be by later, usual time, usual spot at the bar.
(leaves)
(Peter hands Assumpta pen and paper)
Peter: Now, why don't you make a list of books and magazines and things
you'd like me to pick up for you. Might as well pick up other supplies we
need while I'm there. (starts cleaning up their lunch dishes while she makes
her list)
Assumpta: I'll have to get Niamh to make a list of things we need for the
pub, since you won't let me look for myself.
Peter: (comes out of the kitchen) Now, let's get you upstairs, Michael said
you'll need to rest frequently, and I think now's a good time for a nap.
Assumpta: But I've been doing nothing but sleep!
Peter: Don't argue, you won't win. (helps her up and they go upstairs, Assumpta
gives an exasperated sigh)
(Fade to Assumpta's room, inside, door opens and Peter leads her over to
the bed, pulls the covers down, sits her down and takes her shoes off.)
Peter: Do you want me to get you something to change into?
Assumpta: (coyly) Are you planning on dressing me now?
Peter: (blushing deep red) Um, as tempting as that sounds, I think you can
handle that yourself. I'll wait outside the door.
Assumpta: You are good at resisting temptation. There's a night shirt in
the top drawer. (nods toward the dresser.)
Peter: Yeah, well it's the first thing they teach you in seminary. (gets
the nightshirt) Of course, (clears his throat) it's the first thing I want
to forget, ah, at least where you're concerned. (still blushing, hands her
the shirt, leans in and kisses her, pausing a few seconds, and whispers) Let
me know when you're ready, I'll come back and get you settled in. (leaves)
Assumpta sits for a minute, a little taken aback by the flirtation that
just occurred. She had started it, but didn't expect Peter to respond as
he did. Peter is on the other side of the door, leaning against it, eyes
closed, obviously a bit shaken.
Assumpta, now changed is sitting on the bed, clears her throat.
Assumpta: O.K., I'm, um decent.
Peter comes back in , tentatively, approaches the bed, pulls up the covers
as she lies down.
Peter: I'll wake you when the evening crowd starts to come in. (kisses her
slowly, but catches himself and quickly stands) Sleep well. (obviously a little
nervous about being alone with her in her room, hurries out and closes door.
Walks into the room across the hall, his room, goes into the bathroom and
splashes cold water on his face, he hears the door downstairs open and Niamh
enter. Hurry's to dry his face and rushes downstairs)
Niamh: Hi, where is she?
Peter: She's upstairs, I'm sure she hasn't gone to sleep yet, go on up,
I know she'll be happy to see you.
Niamh: (a little disappointed) That's O.K., I'll just wait to see her when
she comes down. (goes into kitchen to start prep for evening rush)
Fade out, people start coming into the pub, Brendan, Padraig and Siobhan
are already propping up their end of the bar. Peter is behind the bar with
Niamh.
Peter: Niamh, I promised Assumpta I'd wake her when the usual crowd came
in. I'll be back to help you with this lot as soon as I get her downstairs.
Niamh: Take your time, (nodding towards the usual crew) they can wait on
themselves, I'll take care of any real customers.
Padraig: Hey, we are paying you know!
Niamh: Yeah, but it's not like you're going to go somewhere else.
Fade to Peter, outside Assumpta's door. knocks.
Assumpta: Hmm. Come in.
( Peter enters, light is already on, Assumpta sits up, Peter goes over and
sits on edge of the bed)
Peter: There's a whole gang down there that can't wait to see you. Are you
feeling up to it?
Assumpta: Yeah. Can you hand me that brush? I'll just need to get myself
together. (Peter hands her the brush, she starts on her hair and Peter brings
the clothes she wore earlier. Assumpta swings her legs over the side of the
bed, Peter gives them a long appreciative look, she goes to stand and gets
dizzy)
Peter: Ssumpta! (catches her as she starts to fall back onto the bed)
Assumpta: I'm fine, I just stood up too fast.
Peter: Try just sitting up for a few minutes. (goes into the bathroom and
gets a cold cloth, brings it back to Assumpta and puts it on her forehead)
Peter: How's that?
Assumpta: Really, I'm fine.
Peter: Let's just take this a little slower.
Assumpta: O.K.. Thanks. For taking care of me.
Peter: (moving the cloth to the back of her neck) I'll stay as long as you
need me.
Fade to Niamh on the phone.
Niamh: Sure, I'll get him for you. (goes upstairs, Assumpta's door is open)
Peter, Fr. Mac is on the phone for you.
Peter: Thanks. Can you stay with Assumpta?
Niamh: Sure, Brendan's in charge down there.
(Peter goes down stairs and picks up the phone)
Peter: Hello.
Fr. Mac: Peter, I just got off the phone with the Bishop. He has approved
your request, he's going to send ti on to the Vatican for the final signature.
it shouldn't take more than a month or two.
Peter: Fr. Mac, I can't thank you enough. I know you worked to put this
through quickly, and I am really grateful.
Fr. M.: Well, there was no point in delaying the inevitable. I do hope that
you'll be happy.
Peter. Thank you Fr. (hangs up phone and rushes back up stairs, Assumpta
is dressed and sitting up)
Peter: Thanks Niamh, I'll take over from here.
Niamh: Oh, all right! But, I want some time with her myself you know!
Peter: O.K.,, tomorrow night, I'll pull the pints, and you two can have
a girls night.
Niamh: Deal. (starts to head downstairs, over her shoulder says) Brendan
was going to take tomorrow night, but I think I like this arrangement better.
Assumpta: You, running the pub? I've got to see that. I think our girls
night just got moved to downstairs.
Peter: Very funny. Now, do you want to know why Fr. Mac called? (sits next
to her)
Assumpta: Let me guess, he wanted to make sure you hadn't changed your mind?
Peter: No, he wanted to tell me that he had just talked to the Bishop. He's
approved my request and is sending it on to the Vatican, shouldn't take more
than a month or two.
Assumpta: That's great! I may have to change my opinion of Fr. Mac.
Peter: I'm not sure what made him change his mind about us, but I'm grateful
for his help. He could have made things so much more difficult for us. lets
get you downstairs, your public awaits. (he stands, helps her up, holding
her left hand with his left hand, his right arm around her waist as they head
down stairs) (at the top of the stairs, the regulars see them and leave their
stools to greet Assumpta. Cut to Assumpta sitting at the bar, Peter standing
behind her, arm around her, it's the end of the night, Peter looks lovingly
at Assumpta)
Peter: (whispers to Assumpta) Should we tell them tonight? (nods toward
her left hand)
Assumpta: (smiles) Sure, go ahead.
Peter: (clears throat) We have something we wanted to tell you all. (all
eyes are on Peter) You already know that I've asked to be released from my
vows, and Assumpta has filed for divorce from Leo. I think you've all known
for a long time the feelings we have for each other (smiles at Assumpta).
We realize that we've already wasted so much time,....well, I've asked Assumpta
to marry me, and she's accepted.
(cheers go up, from all but Padraig, who looks shocked; puts down his drink
and quietly leaves while the others are offering congratulations)
Fade to late night. Assumpta is ready for bed, Peter is standing in the
open doorway, seeming afraid to enter her room)
Peter: Don't try to get up on your own. I don't want you fainting because
you don't want to wake me. Just yell if you need anything. (walks in, gives
her a soft kiss) Goodnight.
Assumpta: Goodnight. (very softly, sincerely) Um, Peter, I'm glad you're
here.
Peter: (smiles) Yeah, me too.
Fade out to the next morning, Peter and Assumpta in the kitchen at the table
finishing breakfast. Knock at the door, Peter gets up to answer door, Peter
gets up to answer, Siobhan enters, they walk into the kitchen.
Siobhan: good morning Assumpta. you're looking feisty today!
Assumpta: Good to see you too Siobhan. (to Peter) I really don't need a
baby sitter.
Peter: Michael doesn't want you alone just yet, and I'm afraid dragging
you around Cildargen would wear you out and Niamh would never forgive me
if you cancel on her tonight.
Siobhan: Besides, we have gossip to catch up on! (to Peter) Go on now, get
out of here so we can talk about you!
(Peter groans, shakes his head, grabs the keys to the van and the shopping
list and heads to the door)
Peter: Have a nice day ladies!
Fade out to Peter walking down the street in Cilldargen, bags in hand, enters
the book store, we see him wandering book store, magazines and books in hand,
heads up to the register.
Cashier: Hi, how are ya today?
Peter: Great, thanks. you?
Cashier: (starting to ring up magazines) Good, thanks. (looks at Peter)
Hey, i've seen you here before, aren't you a priest? (picks up a book to
key in, looks at the title, looks at Peter)
Peter: no, I'm not. (blushing, a little nervous) uh, not anymore that is.
Cashier: (a little tentative) Oh, um, that'll be 38.75.
Peter: (gives her the money) Uh, thanks. (takes bag, change and leaves quickly.
Puts packages in the van and heads to the grocery store)
Fade out to Fitzgerald's, exterior, same day, Peter carrying bags inside.
Assumpta and Siobhan in the chairs by the fireplace. Peter comes in, kisses
Assumpta, takes bags into the kitchen.
Siobhan: Well, I've got a couple of calls to make-see you later.
Assumpta: Thanks, Siobhan, that was a nice chat. (Siobhan leaves, Assumpta
goes into the kitchen, Peter is putting the groceries away, she sits down
at table)
Peter: I got something so you can call me when ever you need me! (pulls
a baby monitor out of the bag)
Assumpta: (laughs) What!?!
Peter: No, really, this way you can rest, I'll keep this with me while I'm
getting things ready for lunch or dinner, you can have some privacy, and you'll
just call if you need something, and I won't have to worry that you've fainted
and hurt yourself. (very proud of himself)
Assumpta: O.K., O.K, (laughing) if it makes you feel better, we'll use it.
(Peter continues putting things away-Assumpta opens the bookstore bag)
Assumpta: At least I'll have reading material, since I'm not allowed to
do anything! (pauses, Peter turns around, looking nervous, moves to take
the bag, too late)
Assumpta: (pulls out books and magazines, two books are "how to" books on
sex) Peter! What are these?
Peter: (blushing and stuttering) Um, those are mine. (quickly grabs the
books and puts them back in the bag)
Assumpta: (laughing) Oh my god! Peter. Why would you ....
Peter: (a bit upset, and embarrassed) Why do you think? (can't look at her)
I..um, I've never. It's just that I want everything to be perfect and it's
not like I've had any opportunity to ...(covers his face with his hands)
Assumpta: Peter (gets up and puts her arms around him) it's O.K., you don't
need to explain. I'm sorry, I had no right to embarrass you. Please don't
worry. Everything will be fine, really.
Peter: I'm so afraid that I'll disappoint you.
Assumpta: Peter! How can you think that?
Peter: It's not as if I have any, um, experience; I mean, I know what goes
where, I'm just not clear on how to...um, go about it.
Assumpta: Peter, you don't need to try to impress me. We'll take things
in our own time and figure things out along the way. (kisses him, he seems
relieved)
Fade out to Peter behind the bar, pulling pints, Niamh and Assumpta sitting
at the bar, things are getting a little busy, but all customers are regulars,
no tourists, so no one is in a rush. Assumpta can't help herself, she starts
wiping up the bar.
Peter: Right! Give me the towel.
Assumpta: But...(Peter grabs the towel, comes around the bar, picks her
up and carries her to the chairs by the fire.
Peter: Sit here and behave yourself (to Niamh) Could you please keep her
entertained?
Assumpta: It's MY pub!
Peter: That may be, but I'm in charge tonight. (Assumpta swats him on the
rear as he walks away, he turns around, shocked)
Assumpta: If you're going to be expecting a tip, you'll need to shake that
more.
(laughter from the regulars, Peter blushes, but he's amused)
Padraig: Now, that's hardly fair, Assumpta. I don't think any of us has
ever smacked your bum.
Brendan: Sure, if anyone had, they'd be pulling back a bloody stump where
their hand used to be! (more laughter)
Fade to Ambrose playing with Kieran, he's on his hands and knees, ducking
behind chairs and popping out, making Kieran laugh. This scene continues for
several minutes.
Fade back to the pub, Peter rings the bell.
Peter: Right. Have you no homes to go to?
Brendan: (shakes his head) You've ruined him Assumpta. He's a regular barman
now. Was a time when we could have talked him into staying open a little longer,
you know?
Peter: The Guarda's wife is here you know. If she doesn't go home soon,
he'll be over here looking for her and we'll all be in court again.
Assumpta: yeah, and this time you don't have your collar to make you a credible
witness!
The regulars start out the door, as usual, they are the last ones to leave.
Siobhan is stretching as she leaves.
Brendan: Back bothering you?
Siobhan: Yeah, I think I'm a little old for this pregnancy bit.
Brendan: (smiles) Why don't I come with you, I'll see if I can work your
muscles loose with a good back rub.
Siobhan (raises an eyebrow) That's a tempting offer, but I suppose you'll
be wanting to stay the night?
Brendan: Hmm, would that be so bad?
Siobhan: No, not so bad. Load your bike into the truck, old man.
Fade to Fitzgerald's, Peter loading glasses onto tray and taking them back
to the kitchen. Assumpta is at the bar, watching with a loving look in her
eyes.
Assumpta: Want some company while you wash up?
Peter: Sure, will I put the kettle on?
Assumpta: If that means you'll join me when the washings done.
(he puts the kettle on and washes the last of the glasses, puts them on
a tray and takes them over to the table, drying them as they have their tea.
Peter: I'm going to have to work on some employment contacts tomorrow, figure
out what it is I want to do. What I CAN do.
Assumpta: Not much you can do in this town.
Peter: No, but I can look to Cilldargen, or Wicklow. I'm sure there's something
I can do close by, so I can commute.
Assumpta: You'd have better luck in Dublin or even Killarney.
Peter: (shakes his head) Too far. I can't handle seeing you only on the
weekends.
Assumpta: Peter, I've been thinking of giving up the pub for some time now.
If the right opportunity presents itself, I could sell up, and make the move.
Peter: I couldn't ask you to leave your home....
Assumpta: That's just it. This really is the only home I've ever known,
and after my mum died, I needed the pub, sort of my last connection, next
of kin almost. But I really don't think Mum would want me throwing money
into this place, barely making ends meet. She wanted more for me, and I did
too. What kind of life could we have here-me working every night and weekends?
I want to have a normal relationship, spend time with you, get on with my
life.
Peter: I see your point, I just don't want you to think you have to leave
here for me.
Assumpta: I know that. But what about you? Don't you ever think about going
home?
Peter: (shakes his head) I don't think there's anything there for me. My
mum's house is going to be sold, my brothers, sister and I will split the
money. They've all moved away. (shrugs, looks at her) I'd like to stay in
Ireland, but other than that, home is where you are. (kisses her hand) '
Roll credits.
Part 4: Waiting
Opening scene: Assumpta is in Dr. Ryan's office, Peter sitting in the chair
while Michael checks her blood pressure, heart, pupils.
Michael: It looks like you've made a full recovery Assumpta. You're very
lucky.
Assumpta: (looks @ Peter) I know. (smiles)
Michael: I'd say you're fine to start back to work. (looks @ Peter) No more
fainting spells?
Peter: Not for a few weeks now.
Michael: Well then, I officially release you from my care.
(Assumpta gets up from the exam. table.)
Assumpta: Good, now maybe Niamh will reschedule Kieran's christening. She
insisted that I stand as God Mother, but not until she could be sure I wouldn't
fall face first into the baptismal font!
(Peter and Assumpta leave the office; Michael files her chart. Peter &
Assumpta walk hand in hand down the street and back into Fitzgerald's. cut
to interior of the pub, the door opens, they enter.)
Assumpta: I should take Fionn for his walk. Want to join us?
Peter: Sure (gets the lead and puts it on Fionn, they all walk back out
the door)
Peter: I guess I'll go back to Brendan's tonight.
Assumpta: (looking hurt) Why would you do that?
Peter: Well, you can manage on your own now, and that was the original plan-for
me to stay with Brendan after leaving my house.
Assumpta: Yeah, but you've been staying with me for nearly 2 months now,
why change things. (she let's Fionn off the lead to run by the river
banks)
Peter: (stops, takes her hands) Assumpta, now that you're well, I don't
know that I can keep saying goodnight in the hall & going to my room
knowing that you're just a few feet away from me.
Assumpta: So, don't. You can move into my room. That's what I've wanted
all along anyway. (gives him a sly smile)
Peter: (sigh) You know I'd like nothing more.....
Assumpta: (annoyed) Then what's stopping you? I just don't get it! You say
you want to be with me, but every time I get too close, you pull away.
Peter: I DO want to be with you, I want to fall asleep with you in my arms
(puts his arms around her, she seems stiff) but, we are both still bound by
other vows. I need for us to both be free before we take that step.
Assumpta: (softening) I hadn't realized that having everything finalized
was that important to you.
Peter: It is. I just want us to do this the right way. I don't want anything
hanging over us. I'm not saying we have to wait until we're married, I don't
think that matters in a commitment like ours, but I can't have you when you
are still another man's wife, and I'm still technically a priest. It won't
be that much longer love. (kisses the top of her head)
Assumpta: (more relaxed now) Alright. We'll wait. But don't think that I'm
going to make it easy for you! (gives him a coy smile, and a very long kiss)
(Peter stands there as she pulls away, obviously not wanting the kiss to
end.)
Assumpta: (whistles for Fionn & starts to walk away) Well, come on then!
I've got a pub to run and a Christening party to plan.
(Fade to Fitzgerald's, interior later that day, Niamh and Assumpta discussing
the christening)
Niamh; Fr. Aiden can do the Christening next Saturday, will that give you
enough time?
Assumpta: I'll talk to Orla and see if she can help me with the catering
so you can focus on the rest.
Niamh: She's been a great help running the pub. You and Peter may be able
to take a few nights to yourself with her around.
Assumpta: Well, she does keep Fr. Mac at bay, if she can handle him, she
can handle the punters for sure. (they both laugh)
(Fade to eveing, Brendan & Peter fishing)
Brendan: Sure my offer still stands, but what happened between you two?
Peter: Nothing happened. Michael released her from his care this morning,
so she doesn't need me ....look, I'm trying to mare SURE nothing does happen.
At least not until we're both free to do...ah, something.
Brendan: (pulls in his line) Oh. Right then. Come on, let's get you a key.
(they walk back to Brendan's)
(Fade to Fitzgerald's, interior, busy night. Peter is helping Assumpta wait
on the customers. Assumpta looks @ the clock)
Assumpta: (calls out) Last orders!
(There is a bit of a rush @ the bar, they handle it together, exchanging
smiles and glances as they work. The crowd thins out, just the regulars are
left)
Peter: I'll start the washing up. (Assumpta watches as he collects the empty
glasses)
(Fade to the chairs by the fire. Pub is clean and ready for the next day.
Peter is sitting by the fire, Assumpta is sitting on his lap, they're sharing
a glass of wine.)
Assumpta: Looks like we're all set for next Saturday. Niamh didn't waste
any time once she heard that I was able to hold her son safely. (smiles @
Peter)
Peter: Hmm. I don't know about this. The last time you set foot in a church,
you were zapped by the fuse box. I'm worried about bolts of lightening, especially
since I've got to stand next to you! (suppressing a laugh(
Assumpta: Oh! I'll give you something to worry about! The wrath of the All
Mighty is nothing compared to me! (stands up, hands on her hips)
Peter: (stands, looking down @ her to emphasize his height advantage) You
don't scare me. (smiles)
Assumpta: Oh really, we'll see about that. (what follows begins as play
wrestling, but quickly turns, they are both breathing heavy from laughing,
Assumpta has Peter pinned to the floor in front of the fire; their laughter
has stopped, he is looking at her very intently, raises his head to kiss
her, his hands wander from her waist to her butt, and back up the length
of her back. He breaks away from the kiss suddenly)
Peter: (voice husky, almost a whisper) Oh Assumpta. I'm so sorry, I can't
do this, not like this. I have to go.
Assumpta: (rolls over, hand on her forehead) I know. DAMN! If I could go
back in time, I'd stop us both from taking vows that are keeping us apart
now.
Peter: (raises up on his elbow to look @ her) No. I wouldn't change a thing.
(Assumpta looks @ him a bit confused) Every choice I've made, good or bad,
has let me to you. It's formed who we are now. If I changed one thing, I might
never have found you.
Assumpta: (caressing his face) Peter, you are quite possibly the most romantic
man that ever lived. (kisses him softly) Now, get out of here before I convince
you to stay.
(Fade out to the day of the christening. Peter is at Brendan's getting ready,
putting on a suit and tie, Assumpta in her room, also getting ready, wearing
a deep red wrap dress, brushing her hair.)
(Fr. Aiden in the church getting things ready, Niamh is getting Kieran dressed,
she's wearing a light cream colored suit, Ambrose is choosing a tie.)
(Orla is in the kitchen @ Fitzgerald's fixing trays of food for the party)
Fade to St. Joseph's, Niamh, Ambrose, Peter & Assumpta, holding Kieran,
are standing at the baptismal font, Assumpta hands Kieran to Fr. Aiden, he
pours the holy water on Kieran's head, Kieran fusses and cries a bit.)
(Fade out to Fitzgerald's-Christening party. Kieran is being passed around,
Peter is talking to Fr. Aiden)
Peter: There's something I've been meaning to ask you.
Fr. Aiden: What is it Peter?
Peter: You know Assumpta and I are still waiting for her divorce and my
release from the Vatican, but we do want to be married once it's all finalized.
(a little nervous) I was wondering if you'd be willing to marry us?
Fr. Aiden: What did you have in mind? You know she can't marry in the church
without an annulment.
Peter: No. I realize that. I just thought, you know, we could use the words,
have the ceremony somewhere else. Maybe down by the River Angel.
Fr. Aiden: Sure Peter. It would still be considered a civil ceremony by
the church, but that won't prevent you from attending Mass or receiving the
sacraments.
(Assumpta walks over to them smiling, hands Peter a glass of wine, puts
her arm around him:
Peter: (smiles at her) Thanks, love. Good news, Fr. Aiden has agreed to
perform our wedding ceremony, not in the church of course......
Assumpta: (looks at Peter then Fr. Aiden) Um, I didn't know we had agreed
to be married by a priest (coldly)
Fr. Aiden: (a bit uncomfortable) I'll give you two some time to discuss
this. I'm happy to help if I can. (walks away)
(Assumpta glares @ Peter and walks into the kitchen, Peter follows) (fade
to the kitchen)
Assumpta: (very angry) Were you going to ask my opinion about OUR
wedding, or am I just to go along with what ever you decide, like a good
little woman?
Peter: (sounding hurt) No, Assumpta, it's not like that. I'm sorry. I
should have talked it over with you first........
Assumpta: You're damn right you should have talked to me first!
Peter: (moves to take her hands, she pulls away, angry tears forming in
her eyes) Assumpta, please, just listen to me. Remember when you told me
that you didn't feel right about requesting an annulment? (she nods) I was
o.k. with that. I knew a church wedding wasn't going to happen, and that's
fine. When I saw you today, at the Christening, everything seemed so wonderful.
You seemed to like Fr. Aiden, and I thought that it wouldn't be such a bad
thing to have him marry us, somewhere other than the St. Joeseph's. (she relaxes
a bit) What do you think about the river Angel?
Assumpta: (looks @ him tenderly) It means a lot to you, doesn't it? To have
a priest marry us.
Peter: I'd like it very much, but I'll do what ever I have to do to be your
husband.
Assumpta: Fr. Aiden's not so bad. (walks over and puts her head on his chest
and hugs him) I'm sorry to be so difficult. I just hate not having a say in
my own life.
Peter: Ah, you're not difficult. You're just Irish. (she swats him, he kisses
her)
(Fade out-Niamh & Ambrose in bed)
Ambrose: Everything was perfect today love.
Niamh: Thanks. It was lovely. I'm glad Assumpta and Peter could stand as
Godparents. (kisses him) It was a good idea you had to ask him. (turns out
the light)
(Cut to Kieran asleep in his crib, smiling)
(Fade to Assumpta & Peter in the pub, Orla comes out of the kitchen,
purse in hand)
Orla: Are you sure you sure you don't want me to clean up before I go?
Assumpta: (carrying a tray of dishes) This is the last of it. Between us
(looks @ Peter) we'll have the washing up done in no time.
(Orla leaves, Assumpta & Peter, carrying the last of the dishes, go
into the kitchen)
Assumpta: I'll put the kettle on, we'll have a cup of tea when we finish
washing up.
(Peter smiles @ her, that goofy in love smile)
Peter: Assumpta, we're o.k., aren't we?
Assumpta: Yeah, we're o.k. (smiles @ him) You're lucky you're so adorable,
otherwise I'd hold a grudge. (snaps the dishtowel @ his butt)
(the kettle starts to whistle, Assumpta pours tea, lets it steep while she
dries the glasses)
Assumpta: Let's sit and have our tea, I'll put these away in the morning.
Peter: I'll come over and help. We can have breakfast together.
(Assumpta starts sorting through the mail that came earlier that day. Pulls
an envalope out, looks at it for a second, opens it. Peter watches her as
he sips his tea)
Assumpta: Well, it looks like I'm a free woman! My solicitor filed the papers
in England, through the court that married us. Since Leo still has his primary
residence there & since he didn't contest the divorce, it was signed off
on with out any problem. (smiles)
Peter: That's great! Why England, though?
Assumpta: Ah, it seems as though it's quicker and easier to have an annulment
in Ireland that a straightforward divorce. Huh. (shakes her head) Not what
I would have guessed. So, (coyly) now we just have to wait on you.
(Fade out-next day, afternoon. Brendan's house. Peter is packing his bag,
Brendan comes home from school & sees Peter packing.)
Brendan: Was it something I said?
Peter: (smiles) I'm glad you're home. I got a call today for an interview,
I have to go to Galway for a couple of days. I might try to make some more
contacts while I'm there.
Brendan: Ah, you're growing up so fast! (wipes a faux tear) When do you
leave?
Peter: Tomorrow, first thing.
Brendan: Good luck. Can I buy you a pint?
Peter: (putting his bag on the floor by the door) Ah, maybe later, I need
to go tell Assumpta the news.
Brendan: So, I'll be pulling my own pints tonight then?
Peter: (smiles) Well, I was hoping she'd have Orla cover for her so we can
have a night out before I go.
(Fade out to Fitzgerald's interior. Assumpta is at the bar, drying glasses
during the lull before the evening crowd. Peter enters, she looks up and smiles)
Assumpta: Hiya.
Peter: Hiya, yourself. (smiles, leans across the bar & gives her a kiss)
I have to go into Galway for a few days, got an interview lined up & thought
I'd see what other contacts I can make while I'm there.
Assumpta: That's great! When do you leave?
Peter: First thing tomorrow, I catch the bus from here @ 7 a.m. Can I steal
you away for dinner tonight?
Assumpta: I'd love it! I'll have to check with Orla & Niamh, see if
one of them can cover for me. Why don't you let me drive you to Galway?
Peter: I couldn't ask you to do that. It's a long drive back by yourself.
If I get this job, we'll drive out and have a look about before you move out,
just to be sure you like it there.
Assumpta: Oh, alright. I'll just come see you off in the morning then. We'll
have to make it an early night though, don't want to keep you out too late
when you have such an early start.
(Fade out, and hour or so later, Niamh is opening the pub for the evening,
Brendan, Padraig & Siobhan at their end of the bar.)
Niamh: Did Peter mention what kind of job he's interviewing for?
Brendan: No, just said he had one lined up & was going to try to make
some other contacts while he was there.
Niamh: (frowning) I know there's no work around here, I just don't want
to see them go.
Siobhan: I know what you mean. If it were just a bit closer, like Dublin,
it wouldn't be so bad. Hey, I've got a few contacts in Dublin at that. Maybe
I'll ring them up and see if they can recommend work for a former Priest.
Niamh: That's great Siobhan, but let's see what it is he wants to do first.
Brendan: Sure, and I'll ask him when he gets home (mocking fatherly voice)
Now, Son, what is it you'd like to be when you grow up?. (laughter from all)
(Fade out to Peter & Assumpta leaving a restaurant in Cildargen, holding
hands as they walk along the street.)
Assumpta: How long will you be gone then?
Peter: The interview is the day after tomorrow, then I thought I'd stay
an extra day or two and see if I can make anymore contacts in case I don't
get this job.
Assumpta: You've got a place to stay then?
Peter: Yeah, I asked about accommodations when they called to set the interview.
They recommended a local pub with rooms to let.
Assumpta: Pub, hmm. Don't go falling in love with the local publican now.
Peter: No chance! (kisses her) You're the only bar maid for me. (she swats
him)
(Fade out, next morning, Peter walking down the street with his bag, approaching
Fitzgerald's, Assumpta comes out, thermos and large bag in hand.
Assumpta: (hands him the bag and thermos) Here's coffee, breakfast and lunch
for you.
Peter: Thanks! (kisses her & looks in bag) What, no pint to go?
Assumpta: Ah, no, they don't travel well. But, I'll give you a kiss for
luck. (pulls him in for a long, lingering kiss as the bus pulls up)
Peter: I'll miss you.
Assumpta: Yeah, me too. Good luck.
Peter: I'll call you when I get there, give you the number and all. (gets
on the bus)
(Assumpta stands there and watches the bus leave. Gives a long sigh &
goes back into the pub.)
(Fade to Peter, on the bus, looking out the window, dreamy look on his face
as the bus enters Galway, he is recalling the bus ride into BallyK, three
years ago. Fade to Peter walking into a pub, checking in, taking the key from
a woman in her 40's, he heads up the stairs. The pub is similar to Fitzgerald's,
but a little more "modern" and not quite as homey. Peter unlocks the door
to his room, enters, puts his bag down & looks around. he sees a phone
next to the bed, and sits down, picks up the phone and dials.)
(fade to Fitzgerald's phone is ringing, Assumpta goes to answer it)
Assumpta: Fitzgerald's.
Peter: (smiling) Hello, gorgeous.
Assumpta: (wicked smile) Fr. Aiden, is that you?
Peter: Very funny.
ROLL CREDITS.
Part 5: The Winds of Change
(Peter is sitting across the desk from a kind looking man with thick gray
hair, in his 60's. The interview is almost over.)
Noel: (interviewer) So, you were a priest for 6 years. I left the priesthood
myself, more than 20 years ago. (wistful look). Why did you decide to leave?
Peter: Ah, that's a rather long story. the church was my life for so long,
but as much as I loved helping people, it was a very lonely life. there were
things I'm sure I'll miss, like performing weddings and baptisms, but I always
felt like something was missing. Then, I came to Ireland, and I met Assumpta
Fitzgerald. (smiles) We spent 3 years denying our feelings. Her always pushing
me to listen to my heart instead of the church, me always challenging her
to open up about her feelings for the church. I finally realized, I didn't
want to imagine my life without her. That talk I told you about; to the teens
about love and relationships, that even came about because of her. She was
my best friend and she confided in me and trusted me like she never had with
even her closest friends. (shrugs) We finally stopped fighting ourselves a
few months ago, admitted what we were both feeling, talked about our hopes
and dreams.
Noel: (smiles) I met my wife when I was assigned in England. I even requested
a transfer to try and get her out of my mind. (laughs) Didn't work. I left
the priesthood 2 months after my transfer and have never regretted it.
Peter: Was she a parishioner?
Noel: Margaret? (laughs) No, no, not a parishioner. She was a social worker;
working with PFI's; pregnant from Ireland. Young women, unwed, pregnant, afraid
their families would send them off to one of the Magdolin Laundries. She
would find families wanting to adopt an infant, they'd take in the young woman,
see her through the pregnancy and labor, and keep the babe when the mother
returned to Ireland. She worked with some of the young couples in my parish,
that's how we met. (smiles, shaking his head) We were at odds more often
than not at first. She forced me to acknowledge the dark side of the church
and I was angry with her for that. But once I started thinking, I realized
for all the good the church was doing, it did as much bad. Especially to
the women. It was only then that I saw how desperately she wanted to help
those girls. They would tell their families they were off to England to find
work, when they were really trying to sort things out in their lives. There
were those that didn't want to give up their children; she helped them find
work, a place to live, and set up a support system for them. Those that did
decide to give their child to a loving couple, well, she didn't try to sway
them, she just found the best family she could for the babe.
Peter: That's what attracted me to Assumpta. She made me think; wouldn't
just let me follow blindly. There's still a lot I love about the church, but
I can't pretend that it's without fault. May I ask, how long did it take to
get the paperwork through the Vatican?
Noel" (frowning) They drug it out a bit. It was really considered a disgrace
in those days. It took more than a year. After about 10 months, we were tired
of waiting and decided to have a civil ceremony. Once we set the date, and
explained to my old parish priest, that got things moving. Three days before
we were going to be married, the final papers came in the mail. We were able
to move the ceremony to my old parish in Killarney. It was hard for us then.
Not just my release from the vows, but people that were friends turned against
us. We didn't have much of a turn out for the wedding. Not many people were
willing to support our "scandalous" union. Still, I'd do it all again. (looks
at Peter) I think you'd like it here Peter. This is an organization that does
a lot of good, really makes a difference in the lives of Kids. We don't make
judgments here, we look at people for who they are. I'll be in touch. (they
both stand and shake hands)
Peter: Thanks. I think I would like it here very much. (leaves)
(Fade out, back in his room Peter is on the phone with Assumpta)
Peter: I think it went well. I gave your number as a contact. I'm at the
pub more then Brendan's anyway, but I'm really hoping to hear before I head
home.
(cut to Assumpta in the pub, on the phone the scene switches back and forth
as they talk)
Assumpta: That anxious to leave town now? You'd better not be planning to
leave me at the alter....er...River.
Peter: Not a chance. I have to marry you for your money, of course! I'd
just feel better if I had a plan for our future. You haven't been coming
on to Fr. Aiden in my absence have you?
Assumpta: Ah, no, Orla's looking after him, keeping him away from the town
temptress.
Peter: (turning serious now) You know I'm only teasing, don't you? That's
not how I see you.
Assumpta: I know. Really. I think Kathleen probably sees me as the town
temptress (laughing) but she's never liked me. Don't worry about me Peter.
People are being very supportive.
Peter: O.K. I just want to make sure you know, you've done nothing wrong.
I fell in love with you all on my own, you didn't woo me away from the church.
I talked a while with Noel, after the interview. He left the priesthood 20
years ago and people were really hard on him and his wife. I just don't want
you to have to go through that.
Assumpta: Peter, you're sweet to worry about me, but I'm stronger than you
know.
Peter: O.K., yeah, I know, you can handle anything. I'll call you tomorrow,
o.k.?
Assumpta: O.K., goodnight.
Peter: Goodnight.
Assumpta: Peter?
Peter: Yeah?
Assumpta: I love you.
Peter: (smiles) I love you too
(Fade Out, to the next morning, Peter is in his room, looking at the local
paper, employment section, circling ads. Phone rings.)
Peter: Hello. (cut between Peter in his room and Noel in his office for
the conversation)
Noel: Hello Peter, Noel here. I'd like to offer you the job.
Peter: Ah, that's brilliant!
Noel: How soon can you start?
Peter: How's Monday?
Noel: Perfect. That'll give you some time to find your way around.
Peter: Yeah, I guess I'll be looking for an apartment today instead of checking
out more employment options!
Noel: Well, as it happens, I have a rental property, not far from the office.
I'm really looking to sell it at some point, but you're welcome to stay there
for a bit. I'll give you a decent rent.
Peter: Sure, thanks for that.
Noel: Let me give you the address, you can meet me there after I'm done
work.
(Peter gets pen and paper, writes down address, fade out to Fitzgerald's,
Assumpta carrying in groceries, phone is ringing. She rushes to put the bags
down, picks up the phone.)
Assumpta: Fitzgerald's. (cut back and forth between the pub and Peter's
room)
Peter: I can stop looking for a job now.
Assumpta: (smiles) Gone back to God bothering, have you?
Peter: Nope. I was offered a great job, decent pay, good benefits.
Assumpta: Great! Will you tell me what it is now? I've been up half the
night trying to guess,
Peter: Youth counseling with Boy's Hope, Girl's Hope.
Assumpta: Peter, that's perfect for you!
Peter: Yeah, it really is. You know, I think that talk I gave to the youth
group; thanks to you; is what impressed them the most. So, when can you come
out? I have a temporary place to live-if you like it, we can see about staying.
It's Noel's place, he wants to sell, but he's letting it to me so we can get
settled. I didn't want to sign a long term lease with out you.
Assumpta: (smiling) Let me see if I can get Niamh and Orla to take the pub
the rest of the week. I can get your things from Brendan's and bring them
out to you.
Peter: That'd be great. I can't wait to see you.
Assumpta: Yeah, me too. Mind if I bring Fionn? I don't want to push my luck
and ask them to take care of him AND the pub.
Peter: No, that's great. There's some great places to walk about, I'm sure
he'll be right at home.
(Fade out as they continue to talk)
(Fade to Assumpta getting out of her van, Fionn is in the front seat watching,
she goes up to Brendan's door, it's early morning and he hasn't left for school
yet. Brendan is expecting her, opens the door before she can knock)
Brendan: There's not much here, but I'll help you load it.
Assumpta: Thanks Brendan.
(Inside Brendan's living room are stacks of boxes, about a dozen total,
mostly heavy, filled with books, they load the boxes up quickly)
Brendan: (takes a pile of towels and blankets and heads outside) He doesn't
have much, suppose he didn't need much as a Priest, but I thought he could
use some things to set up house. I had some extra blankets and things, he's
welcome to them.
Assumpta: (putting the last box in her van) Oh, god, I hadn't even thought
of that. I'll stop back at the pub and grab some dishes and kitchen things.
(Siobhan has just pulled up and heard this last comment)
Siobhan: No need for that Assumpta. We took up a collection and got some
things for his kitchen.
Brendan: (taking boxes from Siobhan's truck and loading them into the van)
Well, we pitched in, but it's Siobhan that had the thought and took care of
buying it all.
Siobhan: (looks at Brendan and smiles tenderly at him) Ah, well......I've
got a heifer about to deliver her first calf-better get going. (she drives
away, Brendan watches, long after her truck is out of sight)
Assumpta: (standing behind Brendan, watching him, clears her throat) Uh,
I think that's everything.
Brendan: (turns toward her) What's that? Oh, um, yeah. Wait! I've got his
mail here too. (goes back in, comes out carrying a bundle of mail and hands
it to her) Have a safe trip. Give us a call when you get there.
Assumpta: Sure. Thanks for everything Brendan. You're a good friend....to
both of us.
Brendan: Ah, just doing what any friend would do. (hugs her & she gets
in the van & drives off, Brendan gets on his bike heads to school)
(Sort of a montage of scenes)
Fade out to Peter in front of a small, 2 story house with a neat little
garden, window boxes filled with flowers. A truck has pulled up, Peter is
talking to the driver, signs some papers, the driver and his helper carry
in a mattress.
Assumpta, driving through the countryside, looks over at Fionn, smiles and
pats him on the head.
Peter, putting sheets, blankets and pillows on the bed.
Assumpta, stopped, looking at directions she has written down, looking around
at street signs.
Peter, riding a new mountain bike down the street. Stops, goes into a shop.
Assumpta, driving again.
Peter, coming out of the shop, carrying a few small bags, and flowers, puts
the bags into his backpack, gets on the bike and rides home with the flowers
in one hand, steering with the other. Cut to the interior of the house, very
empty, Peter opens the door and goes into the kitchen and starts unpacking
the groceries. Camera pans out and we see the interior of the house, small
but cozy. The open floor plan allows us to see the kitchen and living room
in one shot. The rooms are large for the size of the house, and are empty
except for the kitchen cabinets and appliances, the living room has a small
fireplace.
Exterior of house, Assumpta's van drives by, stops, backs up and turns into
the driveway.
Peter, in the kitchen, arranging the flowers in the small vase the shop
sold him. He takes the flowers upstairs and puts them in the window sill
across from the bed. He hears Fionn bark, rushes down the stairs to the door,
opens it, sees Assumpta standing there, hand up, ready to knock.
Peter: (swoops her into his arms in a hug that lifts her off the ground)
Oh! I've missed you!
Assumpta: (smiling) It's good to see you too. (kisses him, Fionn barks,
tail wagging wildly)
Peter: Hiya Fionn! (puts Assumpta down and pets the dog)
Assumpta: (looking around) Nice place. You could do with a bit of furniture
though.
Peter: (still playing with Fionn) I was hoping you'd help me with that;
it needs a woman's touch. I'll show you around and bring in the boxes, then
we can do a bit of shopping before dinner. (he takes her hand and leads her
around the house, they go upstairs, wander through two small, empty rooms,
then he leads her into the room he has set up for her) I did manage to get
a bed delivered this morning. I don't mind making camp on the floor, but I
thought you should have a bit nicer accommodations.
Assumpta: (smiles, sees the flowers on the window sill, walks over and smells
them) Do I get breakfast in bed too?
Peter: That could be arranged, if you behave yourself. (kisses her on the
forehead) Let's get your van unloaded.
(they walk downstairs, out to the van and start carrying boxes, Peter taking
the heavier ones, leaving her empty handed much of the time.)
Assumpta: (brings in the pile of blankets & towels, gestures to the
van) These, and the last few boxes are from the "usual suspects". Brendan
sent this pile to get you started and they took up a collection to get you
some kitchen things. (puts the pile on the floor.)
Peter: (visibly moved by this kindness) It's so hard to think that I'm leaving
them.
Assumpta: We're leaving them, and it's not like we'll never see them again.
We're just moving out of BallyK, we can visit anytime you like. (puts her
arm around him and leans into him)
Peter: Yeah. Not quite the same though. (sighs)
Assumpta: Are you having second thoughts?
Peter: What? About us? God no!
Assumpta: Well, that's good to know, but I meant about moving to the other
side of the country.
Peter: (leans against the counter) Not really. I'm just a little sad about
it, that's all. We'd have to leave BallyK eventually. There really weren't
any jobs there, even in Cildargen. Dublin could have been nice, at least it's
a little closer. Still, this is a great job, great house, all well within
budget. The town is nice, the people are almost as great as BallyK......Do
you like it?
Assumpta: How could I not? The drive up was beautiful. We're far enough
away from the busy city to have a great view, but close enough to town to
be convenient. The house will be perfect, once we get some furniture and
decorate a bit, make it our own.
Peter: (puts his arms around her and pulls her close, kisses the top of
her head) I'm so glad you like it. I just want to give you a beautiful place
to come home to.
Assumpta: (looks up at him and smiles) What did I do to deserve you?
Peter: Good karma I guess.
Assumpta: Karma?! How is it a Catholic Priest believes in Karma?
Peter: (goofy smile) I'm not a practicing Priest anymore. Besides, you said
yourself, I'm not like other Priests. Come on , let's go get some furniture
fill this house.
(Fade out to Peter and Assumpta driving into town. Peter is driving so Assumpta
can watch the scenery, views of brightly painted houses with little gardens,
they enter the town, quite a bit bigger than BallyK, they park along the main
St., go into a store, we see them looking at furniture, sitting on sofas to
try them out. They settle on an over stuffed gold/tan toned couch and love
seat, similar in style to the chairs in Fitzgerald's. Holding hands as they
fill out paperwork, and leave the store to go into the next, selecting various
household items. They leave carrying several bags.
Peter: (as they load bags into the van) Let's get a quick bite, yeah? I'll
take you somewhere nice for dinner, but I'm starved!
Assumpta: (looks across the street @ the pub) Is the local fare any good?
Peter: Sure, it's no Fitzgerald's and the landlady is nice, but nothing
to leave the Priesthood for, but it's not bad.
(Assumpta swats him on the rear as they cross the st. and go into the pub.
They sit down at a table, still holding hands and start looking @ the menu.
We don't hear the conversation, but they are quietly talking. The publican
comes over, a petite woman in her late 40's, chin length wavy red hair.
Sinead: (publican) Peter! How are you liking your new home?
Peter: (smiles) Ah, it's grand. Sinead, this is my fiance' Assumpta Fitzgerald.
Sinead: Ah, so you're the lass he kept on about to anyone that would listen!
Apparently I'm only the second best publican in Ireland.
Assumpta: (blushing) What exactly did he say about me?
Sinead: All good, not to worry. (laughing) Listen, I know you'll be wanting
to find yourself a good job once you move out here, but if you need something
to tide you over, I'm sure I can always use a little help here for as long
as ya' like.
Assumpta: Thanks. I'll keep that in mind. I'm not sure what it is I want
to do yet. I've run a pub for so long, it's hard to know what else I CAN do.
Sinead: You give it some thought. I've got plenty of contacts around town.
I'm happy to point you in the right direction-whatever you want to do.
Assumpta: Thanks, I really appreciate it. All I can offer in return is to
give you a night off when you need it-I know all too well how hard it is to
get away when you're in this business.
Sinead: And I'll take you up on that one, lass! (smiles) Now, what can I
get you two.
Peter: 2 Pints of Guinness and a ploughman's platter. Thanks.
Sinead: Commin' up. (walks away and starts pulling the pints)
(Fade to Peter and Assumpta finishing lunch. Peter pays, they walk out of
the pub, cross the street and get into the van. Peter driving again.)
Peter: Let's take a drive, I'll show you around town a bit before we head
back.
(They drive along, Peter points out various things as they pass. Fade to
them pulling up in front of the house. They are laughing & joking as they
carry things in. Peter turns on a portable radio. We see them unpacking the
bags and boxes all around the house, David Bowie's "Changes" is playing in
the background, Peter is singing along, off key, as he unpacks boxes &
places items in rooms. Assumpta is putting things away in the kitchen, laughing
to herself at Peter's singing.
Fade out to later-early evening Peter and Assumpta sitting on the floor,
taking a break.)
Peter: (looks @ his watch) I guess we should get ready for dinner. Did you
bring anything dressy?
Assumpta: Yeah. Just how fancy is this restaurant?
Peter: Oh, not that fancy. (gets up & offers her his hand to help her
up) you look great no matter what you wear.
Assumpta: Hmm. You really think that, don't you?
Peter: (shrugs) Well, you do.
(Assumpta smiles & heads up the stairs. Peter lingers behind, watching
her, she turns to look @ him since he doesn't seem to be heading up to change,
and sees him watching her.)
Assumpta: Peter! You were checking out my arse, weren't you?
Peter: (blushes, guilty look) Um, no. (starts laughing)
Assumpta: You were! (laughing at him now) How many times have you gotten
away with that with out me knowing?
Peter: (face deep red now) I don't know what you're talking about, Assumpta!
Assumpta: Yeah, right! (goes into her room, still laughing)
(fade out, Peter downstairs in a suit & tie, Assumpta walks down stairs,
wearing a red dress, scoop neck, 3/4 sleeves, a couple of inches above the
knee. Peter sees her & his mouth drops open.)
Peter: Wow! You look amazing.
Assumpta: (her turn to blush) Well, I had planned on making you a nice dinner
and wanted to look nice for you. Have you let Fionn out?
Peter: (still staring at her) Uh, yeah. Fionn's been emptied and refilled.
(pointing to food and water bowls)
(Assumpta takes his arm & they walk out to the van. Fade out, they are
sitting at the table, candle light, eating)
Assumpta: I thought I'd call Niamh & see how things are going, see if
they can handle the pub for a couple more days. i really need to see what
kind of work there is for me here and see if I can get something lined up
before I head back.
Peter: Good. I've missed you.
Assumpta: Me too. When I go back, I'll look into putting the pub on the
market. I think things are pretty well set for the wedding, we just need
to see WHEN it will be.
Peter: Well, I' think Noel might be able to put me in touch with some people
that can help hurry things along for us. Though, he swears the best way to
move the Vatican along is to set the date. I don't think that will work for
us, since we're not getting married in the church.
Assumpta: Do you want to set the date? I know you really wanted to be "officially"
free....
Peter: You know, I've given this a lot of thought. I feel like I've already
started my new life, I don't know if there's much point in waiting, but I
would like to be released from my vows....
Assumpta: (takes his hand) Then, we wait. I don't want you to have any regrets.
There's not that much going on in BallyK that Fr. Aiden won't be able to squeeze
us in.
Peter: (smiles) Yeah, you're right.
Assumpta: Of course I'm right. Always am. (points @ him) Don't you ever
forget that. (smiles @ him)
(fade out to Peter & Assumpta walking into the house, Fionn greets them)
Peter; Let's light a fire. We can put my sleeping bag on the floor to sit.
Assumpta: I'll open some wine. (goes into the kitchen, Peter takes off tie
& jacket, heads upstairs for the sleeping bag, comes down, spreads the
bag on the floor and lights a fire, Assumpta comes out of the kitchen with
wine and glasses, sets the glasses down and pours, kicks off her shoes and
sits down. Peter has the fire going, kicks off his shoes and joins her. They
sit drinking the wine, cuddling up by the fire. Fade out, an hour or so later,
still by the fire, Assumpta stretches & yawns.)
Assumpta: I'm knackered. I think I'll go to bed. (kisses Peter and stands,
he stands too)
Peter: Good night. I'm just going to look through the mail Brendan saved
for me before I turn in.
(she heads up stairs, he stands @ the bottom of the stairs, watching)
Assumpta: And stop watching my arse!
Peter: (smiles) Never!
(he goes into the kitchen, picks up the mail and starts looking through
it. Stops @ one envelope, drops the others on the counter & tears it
open, pulls out the letter, quickly reading, a huge smile crosses his face.
Peter: (yells) Sssumpta! (runs to the stairs) Ssumpta!
(she comes rushing out of her room, pulling her robe around her)
Assumpta: Peter, what's wrong?
(Peter, running up the stairs, stops one step below where she stands, still
holding the letter)
Peter: Nothing's wrong. Everything is just perfect.
Assumpta: What are you yelling about then? You scared me half to death.
Peter: It's official. (holds up the letter) I'm not a priest anymore.
Assumpta: (smiles & looks @ the letter) Oh my god! Peter this is great!
(Peter gives her a nervous look, kisses her, she takes his face in her hands
&
looks into his eyes)
Assumpta: It's hard to believe there was a time I thought we would never
be together; that you'd always be just my friend.
(Peter turns his head & starts kissing her hand, wrist, up to the crook
of her arm, moves up to her neck, she closes her eyes & sighs as he kisses
her collar bone.)
Peter: (mumbles) Ssumpta. I love you. (puts his hands on her hips &
starts leading her to her room, he looks very nervous, Assumpta notices)
Assumpta: Peter, we don't have to rush this. If you're not ready.......
Peter: We've waited 3 years for this moment, if we went any slower, we'd
be going backwards. I don't want to wait anymore. I want YOU. Now. (Assumpta
backs up into bedroom)
(bedroom door closes. Fionn is wandering around, checking out his new home.
We hear sounds from behind the closed door, Fionn goes up the stairs, looking
like a very happy dog, stops outside the closed door, cocks his head to the
side)
Fionn: Wmrrrrh?
Peter: AhSsumptAHHH!
Fionn: (simultaniously) Howlllllll!
(cut to Peter & Assumpta in bed, they look @ the door & burst out
laughing)
Assumpta: Celebate, huh? I'd say either you learned a thing or two from
those books you got in Cildargen, or you're just naturally gifted.
Peter: (blushes) I've been studying a bit. (kisses her)
(fade to the living room, Fionn is dragging the sleeping bag up stairs.
Pulls it up to the bedroom door, walks in circles on top of it a few times
and lays down)
(Fade to BallyK-wind blowing very hard. Debris blowing down the main street.
Rain starts, very heavy, shingles are blowing off of the pub roof.
(fade to the next morning-Galway. Peter is snuggled against Assumpta's back,
face buried in her hair. He stirs. Looks @ Assumpta sleeping, kisses the top
of her head & slips out of bed, pulls on his pants & heads toward
the door. As he opens the door, he sees Fionn, on the sleeping bag)
Peter: (whispers) Hiya, Fionn.
(Fionn looks up, wagging his tail & looks into the bedroom where Assumpta
is still sleeping)
Peter: Come on, let's let her sleep, I can put food in the bowl and open
the door too, ya know. (they head down stairs)
(Fade to BallyK, Niamh & Ambrose looking @ the damage in the upstairs
of the pub, Assumpta's private rooms)
Niamh: (shaking her head) Poor Assumpta!
Ambrose: Now love, it's not that bad. Just a bit wet. I don't think there's
anything that can't be salvaged. I'll help you get everything that needs washing
& we'll call your Dad to get some fans in & get it all dried out
before she gets home. (puts his arms around her)
Niamh: Yeah, but the roof!
Ambrose: Well, since it was a storm that did the damage, the insurance should
cover most of it.
Niamh: I hope so. I'll get started on the washing and see what Dad says
before I call her.
(fade back to Galway, Peter in the kitchen, fixing eggs & toast, coffee
is brewing, Fionn is eating. Assumpta, robe wrapped around her, walks in and
sees him cooking.)
Assumpta: I could get used to this. I love a man that can cook.
Peter: Ah, you should have stayed in bed, I was going to bring it up to
you.
Assumpta: I think you've waited on me enough.
(Peter puts the eggs on 2 plates, just as the toast pops up. Assumpta grabs
2 mugs from the cabinet & pours the coffee. they walk out to the living
room with their breakfast & sit on the floor to eat.)
(Fade out to Fitzgerald's, Niamh & Brian looking at the 2nd floor rooms,
Liam & Donal running shop vacs to get the water up. Fans are set up around
the house, drying things out.
Brian: Well, it's really not that bad. this should be dried out by tomorrow
afternoon. We'll clean the carpets, paint the ceiling & patch the roof
by the end of the week. I'll make out the paperwork for the insurance so they'll
cover it all.
Niamh: Thanks Dad. (kisses him on the cheek) I'll go call Assumpta. At least
it's not all bad news now. (goes down stairs, picks up the kitchen phone and
dials)
(fade out to Peter & Assumpta, just finished eating, she is washing
up the dishes as the phone rings. Peter answers.)
Peter: Hello. Oh, hi Niamh. Yes, we're settling in. We've got some furniture
being delivered today & I got my release paperwork from the Vatican! Yeah,
thanks. O.K., here she is.
Assumpta: (dries her hands & takes the phone) Hi Niamh. Yeah, it is
good news. We had a nice dinner out last night & Peter saw it when he
opened the mail Brendan sent along for him. Sure, what's wrong? (pause) Oh
no! How bad? Oh, Niamh, you're a saint. Thank your Dad for me. O.K., I'll
be back in a few days. Thanks. (hangs up, to Peter) There was a bad storm
last night. The pub has roof damage, which let in the rain, and got the 2nd
floor drenched. (sigh) Niamh says Brian thinks he can get everything set
to rights by the end of the week, and hopefully, the insurance will pay.
Peter: I'm sorry, love. Do you want to go back today? I can come with you
and we'll handle it together.
Assumpta: No, no, Niamh seems to have it all under control. It's just the
final sign that I needed to be sure I really do want to sell, rather than
hire someone to run it for me. I'll stay here for a few more days as planned,
then deal with selling the pub when I get back. Now, lets pick a date for
this wedding so I can talk to Fr. Aiden when I get the pub settled.
Fade out
Roll Credits.
Part 6: Settling in
(Opening scene, the house in Galway, Assumpta is on a ladder, hanging lace
curtains in the living room. A car pulls up outside, a tall blond woman in
her 50's gets out & takes a basket filled with wine, cheeses, bread &
fruit out of the car & knocks on the door. Assumpta climbs down from the
ladder & opens the door. The woman greets her with a smile)
Margaret: Good morning! I'm Margaret, Noel's wife. You must be Assumpta.
(hands her the basket) Welcome to Galway.
Assumpta: (taking the basket) Thank you. Come in. (stands aside to let Margaret
pass) I've heard so much about you, it's nice to finally meet you. Please,
sit (motions to the sofa), I'll put the kettle on.
(Margaret sits, Assumpta puts the basket in the refrigerator & fills
the kettle)
Assumpta: Are you hungry? I can bring out some scones.
Margaret: No, don't trouble yourself. I'll just have tea.
Assumpta: (getting cups and tea out of the cabinet) Peter said you're to
thank for the lovely garden.
Margaret: I'm glad you like it. I planned it out to b mostly maintenance
free. I'm afraid I haven't the time to put into it recently, I'm so busy with
this new support group I'm starting.
Assumpta: (walking out to living room) Support group?
Margaret: Yes. It's meant to give women in bad situations some help to make
a better life for themselves.
Assumpta: That's great. do you have backing from an agency?
Margaret: Sure, it's government funded, you know. After the last of the
Magdoline Laundries closed, the government was willing to admit that we were
an "under served" part of society. It took a few years, but a group of us
fought to get a proper agency set up to help women help themselves.
(the kettle whistles, Assumpta goes to kitchen and pours the tea.)
Margaret: So, when will you be joining Peter here permanently?
(Assumpta brings out the tea)
Assumpta: As soon as possible. I'm going back to BallyK tomorrow. I hope
to get my pub on the market by next week, then I'll need to get things in
place for the wedding.
Margaret: Ah, yes, Noel said you're not going to marry in the church. Where
will the ceremony be held?
Assumpta: No, no church wedding. We'll have it beside the river, but the
new curate will be performing the ceremony. He's nice enough, and I know it
will mean a lot to Peter. Anyway, I hope to be all moved in here in a few
weeks so I can start looking for a job.
Margaret: Would you be interested in working with me, on a part time basis?
I could really use some help with this support group, and Peter mentioned
you tried to start a women's group in BallyK.
Assumpta: Ugh. That didn't go so well, I'm afraid. It caused quite a bit
of trouble.
Margaret: Oh, now, you just didn't have anyone interested in BallyK. We're
a much larger community, and we've got plenty of women here that want a group.
I need someone to teach them some career skills. Some of them have dreams
of starting their own businesses one day, you could help them figure out how
to run them. What do you say?
Assumpta: Well, ah, sure. I think I'd like that. I won't be able to start
for a while yet. I have to get the pub sorted out, and then there's the wedding....
Margaret: No worries. The offer's there as soon as you're ready for it.
Assumpta: Thank you. Really, I don't know how we could ever begin to repay
you and Noel. You've been so kind to us, so helpful. (Assumpta gets a bit
choked up)
Margaret: (pats her hand) No, there's no need for all that. Sure, you'd
do the same for anyone else. Peter's talked ENDLESSLY about how kind &
generous you are.
(Fade out to BallyK. Niamh behind the bar, Brian sitting across from her,
she seems annoyed with him as she vigorously wipes down the bar.
Brian: Now look, all I'm saying is I think she'd rather see the pub sold
to someone she knows, than to a total stranger.
Niamh: Dad! Is that why you were so willing to help with the storm damage,
just so you could use it to guilt her into selling to you?
Brian: (looking hurt by her comment) (sighs) No. That's not why I helped.
But the fact remains, she needs to sell, why shouldn't I be the one to buy?
Niamh: (points her finger at him) Don't you dare try to talk her into giving
you a deal. She and Peter need this money so they can start a life for themselves!
Brian: (holds up both hands) I promise, I'll give her a fair price.
(fade out to evening, the house in Galway. Assumpta is in the kitchen, fixing
dinner, the front door opens, Fionn runs up to greet Peter, he stoops down
& pets the dog, then goes into the kitchen, comes up behind Assumpta &
puts his arms around her waist.)
Peter: Thank you for hanging the curtains. I was going to do that tonight.
Assumpta: (turns around in his arms & kisses him) I have other things
for you to do tonight. I leave tomorrow & I'll be needing your undivided
attention.
Peter: (blushes) Ssumpta!
Assumpta: (laughs) Oh, don't pretend to be shocked! You're no longer an
innocent.
Peter: What time does your train leave?
Assumpta: 8:00
Peter: (kisses her) I'm going to miss you.
Assumpta: I'll miss you too, but it is only a week you know.
Peter: A week? Well, I guess we better get started.
Assumpta: Started? On what?
Peter: Well, if I can't do this (kisses her for several seconds) for a whole
week (picks her up) I need to do a whole lot (kisses her again) and so much
more, before you leave. (starts carrying her toward the stairs)
Assumpta: Wait! (laughing) I need to turn off the stove!
(fade out to later that evening, Peter & Assumpta sitting in front of
the fire, he's in sweatpants and sweatshirt, she's in a robe.)
Assumpta: I should do those dishes before bed.
Peter: No, you go to bed, I'll take care of the dishes.
Assumpta: Let's do it together, (stands & takes his hands to help him
up) the faster we get it done, the sooner we can get to sleep.
Peter: (ornery grin) Sleep?
(she laughs at him, fade out to the next morning, train station, Peter holding
Fionn's leash, other arm around Assumpta.)
Peter: I'll see you on Saturday. (kisses her)
Assumpta: Have a good week. I love you. (stoops down to pet Fionn) Be good.
(hugs the dog)
Peter: Love you. (they hug, Assumpta gets on the train. Peter and Fionn
watch the train pull out until it is no longer in sight)
Peter: (looks at the dog) Let's go home, Fionn. (they head out to the van,
Peter opens the door, Fionn jumps in, Peter gets in and closes the door &
they drive home) (Cut to Assumpta, on train, looking out the window)
(Cut to Fitzgerald's-Niamh washing the windows, Siobhan pulls up)
Siobhan: Can I give you a hand with anything?
Niamh: Am I ever glad to see you! Orla's sick, and I need to pick Assumpta
up in Dublin this afternoon, but now there's no one to watch the pub.
Siobhan: How about i pick her up for you?
Niamh; (sigh) Oh, thanks Siobhan.
Siobhan: I'm off then. I've got one call to make this morning, then I'll
head off to Dublin. I can get some shopping done; I'll be needing a wedding
gift soon enough, I suppose. (smiles)
(Fade to Peter @ work, talking to Noel)
Noel: Will you be taking the train as well then, or are you driving back
to BallyK?
Peter: Oh, I'll be driving, so we can start moving some of Assumpta's things
out when we come back.
Noel: Well, you should head out on Friday, so. I'll take over the youth
group for you that day.
Peter: Thanks, Noel. (smiles) That would be great.
Noel: None needed. I know you'll be anxious to see her by the week's end.
Once you get the wedding date set, let me know so I can work out some time
off for you.
Peter: Sure. I hope Assumpta will be able to talk to Aiden today about the
wedding. Will you and Margaret be able to come?
Noel: We wouldn't miss it. Margaret thinks quite highly of Assumpta.
(Peter smiles, Fade out to Dublin, train station. Assumpta getting off train,
no luggage because she left most of her things @ Fitzgerald's. She looks around
for Niamh, and spots Siobhan.)
Assumpta: I wasn't expecting to see you! (hugs her friend)
Siobhan: Orla's sick & Niamh didn't want to close the pub, so I said
I'd come collect you.
Assumpta: Thanks, Siobhan. Can I take you to dinner then?
Siobhan: I'll not turn the offer down.
(fade out to Peter, driving home in Assumpta's van. He pulls up outside
his house, goes to the door & opens it. Fionn rushes to greet him.
Peter: (pets the dog) O.K., Fionn, let me get your leash and make a sandwich,
then we can go for a walk.
(Peter goes to the kitchen, puts the kettle on, makes a couple of sandwiches,
puts them in his backpack with some fruit & pours the tea in his thermos,
puts the thermos in his pack, puts Fionn's leash on and they head out the
door.)
(Fade to Assumpta and Siobhan in a restaurant having dinner)
Siobhan: So, the roof's fixed, and Niamh supervised clean up of the inside,
so I think you'll be ready to sell right away.
Assumpta: I've been looking into it. I may just close the pub next week
and arrange for it to be auctioned after the wedding. I think that will be
easier , and give me the best price.
Siobhan; You know Brian has his eye on it.....
Assumpta: Yeah, I know. As long as he meets my reserve price, I have no
qualms...
Siobhan: Well, I don't know if Niamh will share your point of view. He'll
want her to run it for him.
Assumpta: She's got enough to do taking care of Kieran. I feel guilty asking
her to run things while I'm running off to Galway to set up house.
Siobhan: Sure, and she wants time with her family, but I think she enjoys
the work too. Gets her out of the house for a bit. I don't think Ambrose is
too fond of it though.
Assumpta: Well, it may not come to pass. I just hope she does what she wants,
not what Brian or Ambrose want.
(The waitress brings the bill, Assumpta leaves money on the table &
they get u to leave. Fade to Fitzgerald's. Niamh behind the bar, Brendan
& Padraig in their usual spot. The door opens & Ambrose enters, carrying
Kieran)
Ambrose: (walks up to the bar) Niamh, Kieran has a fever.
Niamh: (pulling a pint) So, give him a dose of the medicine Dr. Ryan gave
us.
Ambrose; Niamh! He needs his mum.
Niamh: (puts down the pint and takes Kieran, and feels his forehead) He's
not that warm, Ambrose. I'm busy. You'll just have to take care of him until
I close. (hands Kieran back to Ambrose)
Ambrose: (takes Kieran) Your family needs you, Niamh. (looks around at the
pub, other than Brendan & Padraig, only 2 other people) More than the
pub! (turns & leaves)
(fade out to Peter playing with Fionn in the small yard behind his house.
Fade to Assumpta & Siobhan pulling up outside Fitzgerald's. They park
& go into the pub)
Assumpta: Hiya Niamh.
Niamh: (rushes over to hug her friend) Welcome home!
Assumpta: Yeah, yeah, yeah. I heard Orla's sick, so just let me make one
phone call, then I want you to take the rest of the night off.
Niamh: You just got in, you should rest a bit.....
Assumpta: I won't hear it Niamh. (goes into the kitchen & picks up the
phone, dials.
(Siobhan takes her usual seat next to Brendan)
Siobhan: Sure, it's a slow night, Niamh, and I can help if it gets busy.
You should go spend some time with your family.
Niamh: (crosses her arms) I'm not neglecting them you know! Ambrose is fully
capable of taking care of Kieran, weather he'll admit it or not. (storms out)
(Siobhan looks @ Brendan, confused)
Brendan: Ah, well you missed the Egan marital argument about just that,
not 5 minutes before you came in.
Siobhan: (sighs) Poor girl. She's trying to please everyone else, and making
herself miserable.
(fade to Assumpta in the kitchen, on the phone with Peter. The scene switches
back and forth between them for the conversation)
Assumpta: Hiya. We just got in. Siobhand met me at the station and we had
dinner before coming back. Have you eaten?
Peter: Yeah, I made some sandwiches and took Fionn for a long walk. We shared
a picnic by the stream.
Assumpta: You'll spoil that dog. (smiles)
Peter: Hey, we're bonding, isn't that right Fionn? (Fionn barks)
Assumpta: Yeah, sure you are. I was going to try to talk to Aiden tonight,
but I just gave Niamh the night off, so I may not have a chance to see him
'till tomorrow. Do you have a date in mind?
Peter: Sooner the better.
Assumpta: Sure, and you're trying to make an honest woman of me fast then,
aren't you?
Peter: No, I just can't wait to call you my wife.
Assumpta: (laughs) But won't your family need a little notice? And what
about work?
Peter: Don't try and back out on me now, just because you've had your way
with me!
(Assumpta laughs)
Peter: Noel said he'll be able to cover the load, so not to worry there.
As for my brothers, they've been warned that we were going to set a date fast,
and anyway, they'll probably fly in the day before, and leave the next morning.
Assumpta: O.K., I guess I'll go look for a dress tomorrow too. I'd better
go and let Niamh get home. Love you.
Peter: Good night love. See you soon.
(Assumpta hangs up the phone smiling, and goes out to the bar. looks around)
Assumpta: Where's Niamh?
Siobhan: I think I may have upset her. She didn't seem to want to go home,
and I was just trying to reassure her that you'd be fine, but she thought
I was accusing her of neglecting her family....
Brendan: She and Ambrose had words just before you came in, so...
(Fade to the next morning; Assumpta is walking down the street to the curate's
house, knocks on the door, Aiden answers)
Aiden: Assumpta, what can I do for you?
Assumpta: Peter got his paperwork through the Vatican, so I'm here to set
a wedding date.
Aiden: That's great news. I'm happy for you both. Come in and let's take
a look at my calendar.
(they go into the house, Aiden puts the kettle on and motions for Assumpta
to have a seat @ the table.)
Assumpta: Peter will be here this weekend, so we can go over details then
if you'd like. He's very anxious to get the date set.
Aiden: Sure, let's see, (looking at his calendar) how about two weeks from
Saturday?
Assumpta: I think I can get things together by then. (the kettle whistles,
Aiden gets up & pours the tea)
Assumpta: Thanks.
(Aiden puts the kettle back)
Aiden: Now, let's talk about the ceremony a bit. I know you wanted it to
be on the banks of the river, so I'm guessing you'll want short and simple?
Assumpta: Yeah, but what ever Peter wants is fine. We'll be having the party
at the pub right after, so everything's close by.
(Fade out, an hour or so later, Assumpta leaving Aiden's & heading toward
the Guarda house. She gets to the door & knocks, Niamh answers)
Assumpta: Hi. I didn't get a chance to thank you before you left. Everything
O.K.?
Niamh: Yeah. No. I don't know.
Assumpta: Look, I've closed the pub for the day. Want to come to Cildargen
with me? We can talk it out over lunch. And dress shopping.
Niamh: (smiles) You've set a date?
Assumpta: Two weeks from Saturday. Be my maid of honor?
Niamh: You know I will. I don't have anyone to watch Kieran.
Assumpta: So, bring him with us.
(Fade out, scenes of Assumpta and Niamh trying on dresses. They leave, bags
in hand, Kieran in the pram, and head into a sandwich shop. They look over
catering menus and make orders.)
Assumpta: Right! Lunch?
Niamh: Sure. Let's just order something here.
(they go to a table & order sandwiches)
Assumpta: This was easier than I expected. Thanks for your help Niamh. Listen,
I know it's been rough minding the pub while I've been gone, and I don't want
to cause problems between you and Ambrose....
Niamh: It's not your fault.....
Assumpta: No, you're still newly married, and you have Kieran, that's a
big adjustment, it's not fair for you to be away from them every night. I'm
putting the pub up for auction the week after the wedding, so, starting Monday,
I've decided, to keep it closed during the week. You and Orla can work out
how to handle the weekends.
Niamh: Assumpta, you'll loose business....
Assumpta: It costs more to open during the week than we're bringing in.
Besides, it's off season now anyway.
Niamh: I know you're exaggerating. Thanks. I think it would do me good to
be home a bit more.
(Fade out to very early Fri. morning. It's still dark. Peter is leaving
his house, big thermos of coffee in one hand, duffel bag in the other, Fionn
by his side. he locks the front door, balancing the thermos in his arm, goes
to the van & opens the door. Fionn jumps in, Peter gets in & starts
the van, turns the radio on for noise. Fade to Assumpta just finishing up
the last of the dishes from the pub. She stretches, gives the kitchen one
last look, turns off the light and heads upstairs.
Fade to Peter driving, Rolling Stones on the radio. Fade back to Assumpta
in her robe, brushing her hair, she turns off the light and gets in bed. Fade
out.
Fade to several hours later, Peter, pulling up behind Fitzgerald's. He gets
out of the van, Fionn jumps out. It's still very early, the sun is up, but
there's no activity in the town. He lets himself in the kitchen door, puts
down food and water for Fionn, locks the door & quietly heads upstairs.
Fade to interior of Assumpta's room, she's sleeping, covers over her head,
all we see is her hair, wild from fitful sleep. Door opens, Peter smiles,
closes the door & walks over to the bed.)
Peter: (whispering) Assumpta.
Assumpta: groans
(Peter takes off his shoes, sweater & jeans, & crawls into bed,
just as he moves closer to put his arms around her, she wakes up)
Assumpta: (groggy, smiles) What time is it?
Peter: It's early, go back to sleep.
Assumpta: How did you get here so fast? (curls up against him)
Peter: I couldn't sleep. (yawns) I started driving about 1:00.
Assumpta: Too dangerous (yawns) What if you'd fallen asleep?
Peter: No, I was too wired. Had lots of coffee. I would have pulled over
if I was sleepy. Besides, I wanted to see you. I don't sleep well without
you.
Assumpta: You'd only been sleeping WITH me for a few days.
Peter: Yeah, well, those few days were the best sleep I've ever had. (kisses
her forehead)
Assumpta: (smiles) I'm going to go put a sign in the window. I'm not opening
'till tonight. I want a quiet morning with you.
(she gets up, goes downstairs & quickly makes up a sign "closed, opening
at 5 p.m." and tapes it to the window. She heads back upstairs, Fionn follows
& gets back in bed, snuggles up to Peter, Fionn lays on the floor and
they all fall asleep)
(Fade to late morning, Peter and Assumpta still asleep, a tangle of arms
and legs, on one side of the bed, Fionn is taking up the other half. Fade
to Niamh walking down the street with Kieran in his pram. She sees the closed
sign, peers in the window, looks confused, takes Kieran out of the pram, pulls
a key out of her pocket & opens the door to the pub. Carrying Kieran,
she goes to the kitchen, finds it empty & heads upstairs, Assumpta's door
is ajar, so she opens it, sees the couple and gasps.
Niamh: Assumpta!
Assumpta: (jolts awake) What? What's wrong?
(Niamh, lips pursed, looks @ Peter, who is starting to stir, Assumpta follows
her stair, looks back @ Niamh, who storms out. Assumpta puts on her robe &
rushes after her.)
Peter: (barely awake) Where're you going?
Assumpta: (kind of growls) Saint Niamh. She seems to have a problem seeing
us in bed together. (rushes out into the hallway and catches up with Niamh
in the pub.)
Assumpta: Niamh! What's the problem?
Niamh: For God's sake Assumpta! He was a priest, you've got him committing
a sin! You're not married yet!
Assumpta: I don't believe you! We were SLEEPING. Whether or not anything
else has passed between us is none of your business. And, as I recall you
were pressuring Ambrose to "sin" before you'd even accept his proposal.
Niamh: And Fr. Clifford advised me against it, the hypocrite!
Assumpta: He's not "Fr. Clifford" anymore. It's not for you to judge me,
Niamh.
(Peter has come downstairs in his jeans & t-shirt, puts his arm around
Assumpta)
Peter: (very calmly) Niamh, any advice I gave you as a priest was based
on church doctrine. That was my job. I never judged you, don't judge Assumpta.
(Niamh storms out, pushing the pram. Assumpta slams the door behind her)
Assumpta: That sanctimonious,,,,,
Peter:(pulls her into his arms) Shhh, don't, she just wasn't expecting to
see....
Assumpta: See what? We were sleeping!
Peter: I know, but it must have looked.....
Assumpta: What? Say it, you're ashamed of what we've been doing!
Peter: Assumpta, I'm not ashamed of anything, and I don't care who knows......
Assumpta: She doesn't "know"anything, she's jumping to conclusions.
Peter: She's just having trouble adjusting.
Assumpta: Why are you taking her side?
Peter: I'm not. I just want to help smooth this over, she's your closest
friend.
Assumpta: Some friend.
Peter: I know, she said some terrible things to you. People say things they
don't mean when they're upset. Let things cool down a bit, I'm sure she'll
be thinking more clearly later. (kisses the top of her head) I'll make some
breakfast, just sit down and relax.
Assumpta: (sighs) No, you sit. I've had more sleep than you.
(Fade to later that day. We see Peter leaving the Pub & heading to the
Guarda house. He knocks, Niamh opens the door, stands arms crossed, he's talking,
but we don't hear what is being said. she lets him in. Fade to Egan's kitchen,
Peter & Niamh talking.
Peter: She's upset Niamh. You're judging her, and she's hurt that her friend
would think poorly of her.
Niamh: Well, it's not right Peter! What happened to your beliefs? You're
a hypocrite.
Peter: (very calm) Niamh, when you came to me, that first that first day
I met you, you were asking for my approval for you to move in with Ambrose.....
Niamh: And you wouldn't give it!
Peter: I couldn't! What would your father have done if I'd given you my
blessing? Fr. Mac would have had me transfered before I'd even unpacked!
Niamh: Oh, but it's fine for you & Assumpta....
Peter: You know I had no problem with it on a personal level, but the church
does. I couldn't advise you to go against church doctrine.
Niamh: And I suppose you're above doctrine, being a priest.
Peter: I'm not a priest anymore, you know that. What ever decisions I've
made in my life are not yours to judge. I never once judged you, and wouldn't
have, no matter what decision you made. Look, I don't care what you think
of me, but Assumpta is your friend. Don't you think you owe her an apology?
You really hurt her.
Niamh: Are you done?
Peter: (looks annoyed) Yeah, I'm done.
Niamh: Good, I've things to do.
(Peter lets himself out as Niamh folds laundry, obviously angry)
(Fade to Peter walking into the church. Inside he's greeted by Fr. Aiden,
they go into the sacristy.)
Aiden: I guess Assumpta told you that we have a date set?
Peter: Yeah, she said that I should work out the details of the ceremony
with you.
Aiden: What did you have in mind.
Peter: Just something simple; exchanging vows.
Aiden: That's it? You're sure?
Peter: Yeah. I just want a simple ceremony, witnessed by our friends and
family, to be recognized as man and wife in the eyes of God.
(Fade out to later that day, Peter is walking back to Fitzgerald's. He goes
in, looks in the kitchen for Assumpta, not finding her, he heads upstairs
and finds her packing boxes in her room.
Peter: (walks over to her and gives her a long, tender kiss) How are you?
Assumpta: Still annoyed.
Peter: She's bound to come around. Don't let it spoil things for you.
Assumpta: (sighs) Yeah. I hope she will. I'm almost done packing.
(picks up a box)
Peter: I'll take those to the van. Why don't you relax a bit before we open?
Assumpta: Only if you'll join me for tea when you're done.
Peter: Deal!
(fade to evening, Fitzgerald's interior, Peter pulling pints, Assumpta talking
to Brendan @ the end of the bar)
Brendan: I'd be honored to give you away. (takes her face in both hands
& plants a kiss on her forehead. Peter is watching this exchange and
smiles)
Brendan: Wait! Does this mean I have to pay for the reception?
(Assumpta throws her bar towel at him. The door opens, Niamh walks in &
sits at the other end of the bar. Peter looks cautiously at her.)
Niamh: I'm sorry, Peter. I had no right to say those things to you.
Peter: (still a bit annoyed) It's not me you need to apologize to.
Niamh: I know I need to talk to Assumpta, but I was rude to you, and I'm
sorry for it.
Peter: Thanks.
Niamh: (calls out) Assumpta. Can I have a word?
Assumpta: (tersely) Yeah, sure.
(they walk into the kitchen)
Niamh: I'm so sorry! (hugs Assumpta) I was awful.
Assumpta: Yeah, you were. I'm sorry too. So much is changing. You've been
such help, taking care of this place while I went off to Galway, I should
have been more understanding.
Niamh: (smiles) So, have you?
Assumpta: Niamh! (laughs)
Niamh: How was he?
Assumpta: I'm not answering that!
Niamh: (frowns) That bad?
Assumpta: Niamh!
Niamh: Don't worry, I'm sure he's willing to learn. It just takes a bit
of practice.
Assumpta: He doesn't need to learn anything, it was perfect.
Niamh: Ha! I knew I could make you talk!
(fade out as Assumpta hurls a pot holder @ Niamh)
(fade to the pub, Peter leaning on the bar, talking to Brendan, Siobhan
and Padraig have come in and are listening in on the conversation)
Brendan: (doing his best "fatherly" voice) Now, once I give Assumpta over
to you, I don't want her back.
Peter: Never! I wouldn't give her up for anything in the world.
Brendan (Smiles) Good man. (lifts his pint, in a toast)
(Niamh & Assumpta come out of the kitchen, still laughing, Niamh looks
at Peter, raises an eyebrow)
Niamh: (whispers to Peter) Stud.
(Peter looks @ Assumpta, a bit shocked)
Assumpta: She tricked me.
Niamh: She was dying to tell me anyway. Wasn't hard to get it out of her.
Brendan; (Winks, to Peter) That's women for ya. Nothings a secret anymore
man. Best that you get used to it now.
Siobhan: I beg your pardon?
Brendan: (to Peter again, still joking) You also have to watch what you
say, you'll be in trouble more often than not.
(Siobhan gives him a good natured swat)
Assumpta: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Listen up, I've an announcement to make. My
dear friend Niamh here has been working herself to death trying to keep up
the pub and keep her family happy, and I'll have no more of it. I've decided
to close the pub during the week, Niamh will still manage the books, and any
rooms that are rented; Orla will open the pub on the weekends.
Padraig: (angry) What's this? You're just going to close the pub now?
Assumpta: Ah, Padraig, what's the point in opening for three or four customers?
The pub's going up for auction after the wedding anyway.
Padraig: (slams down his drink) You seduce the priest, and now you can't
get out of town fast enough, is that it?
(Assumpta, looking very hurt, gets teary eyed & walks into the kitchen,
Niamh follows)
Peter: (opens the till, puts the money for Padraig's drink on the bar &
takes the glass and pours it out & growls) You're barred. Don't come back
until you've an apology for her.
(Padraig take the $ & storms out. Fade to Assumpta leaning against the
counter, Niamh standing next to her)
Niamh: I'm so sorry. This wouldn't have upset you so much if you weren't
still reeling from my outburst.
Assumpta: No, Niamh, that's forgotten.
(Peter walks in, Niamh looks at him)
Niamh: I'll go watch the bar.
Peter: (puts his arm around Assumpta) He's gone. Barred.
Assumpta: Hey, at least I know where I stand. (laughs through her tears)
Peter: He doesn't really mean it. I think he's trying to be angry with you
so it won't be so hard to see you go.
Assumpta: (frustrated) Oh, will you just stop!
Peter: What? I'm trying to help.
Assumpta: You're trying to make me forgive him. You're not my priest anymore,
Peter!
Peter: (can't help but laugh) Assumpta, I was never YOUR priest.
Assumpta; (does not see the humor in her comment, rolls her eyes) You know
what I mean. (pushes past Peter, he reaches out and stops her)
Peter: I'm just trying to help. I thought if you could understand why he's
acting like a spoiled child, you might not be so hurt.
Assumpta: I'm not hurt, I'm angry. Believe me, he'd rather me be hurt than
angry. (she has a fierce look on her face)
Peter: Ssumpta, give him another chance, yeah? Please. (gives her an imploring
look)
Assumpta: Oh, fine!
(fade out, next morning, Peter and Assumpta are loading the last of the
boxes into her van, Niamh crosses the street and stops to talk)
Niamh: (hugs them both) Have a safe trip. And, don't worry, I'll take care
of all the last minute things.
Assumpta: Thanks Niamh. We'll see you next week.
Niamh: Yeah, about that. When will you be getting in?
Assumpta: Why, planning on turning my pub into nursery or something while
I'm away?
Niamh: No, I just thought we'd plan a girls night before the wedding. Brendan
has plans for your husband to be. No need for the boys to have all the fun!
Peter: Ah, I told him I didn't want a bachelor party.
Niamh: I think he'd be having one with or with out you, so you might as
well go along with it.
(Peter and Assumpta get in the van and drive off. Fade out to the following
week. Thursday morning, Peter and Assumpta in her room @ Fitzgerald's)
Peter: My brothers will be here tonight.
Assumpta: I've got rooms ready for them. I take you'll all be out late tonight?
Peter: Not if I can help it. I'd much rather have an early night here with
you.
Assumpta: Ah, but we've got a hen party here tonight, so Niamh says you
can't be here.
Peter: (smiles) We can always skip out on them and meet up....
Assumpta: Niamh will be watching me every minute. She's making me stay with
her until the wedding.
Peter: What? You never said anything about that!
Assumpta: Just found out myself.
(fade to Hendley's, Brendan is paying for some snacks)
Kathleen: (looking at the huge assortment of crisps, dips and other snacks)
Having a party?
Brendan: Ah, it's the best man's job to throw the stag party, Kathleen,
and I take my job very seriously.
Kathleen: It's a disgrace! Everyone making such a fuss over those two. You
should be ashamed of yourself, Brendan Kearny, for supporting this.
Brendan: Can't you be happy for anyone, Kathleen?
Kathleen: (gives a shocked gasp) It's not bad enough, them carrying on while
she was a married woman and he a priest, they've been living in sin for the
past month!
Brendan: Actually, Galway. (Kathleen gives him a confused look, he picks
up his bag and walks away, calling over his shoulder) They've been living
in Galway. I'm not sure where Sin is, but they've definitely been living in
Galway. (Kathleen looks very annoyed at having been put in her place.)
(fade out to that night, Niamh and Siobhan are already at the pub, there
are a few other women there,as well as Peter's two brothers. Brendan walks
in)
Brendan: Peter! Ready to go.
Peter: Yeah, I'm coming. (kisses Assumpta) See you later.
Niamh: You'll see her Saturday.
Peter: Brendan, my brothers, Andrew and Michael.
Brendan: Nice to meet you, let's go!
(the men leave, and the champagne is poured. We see snips of the women's
party and the men's party all mixed together. The men are at Brendan's, he
of course has a keg of Guinness for the party)
Padraig: (takes Peter aside) Listen, I'm sorry for what I said to Assumpta.
I, ah, I don't know what I was thinking. I didn't mean it.
Peter: I'm not the one you should be saying this to.
Padraig: You're right (he's obviously been hitting the keg quite a bit,
staggers) I'm going to go tell her myself. (heads out the door.)
Peter: You're not driving!
Padraig: No, I'm taking Brendan's bike. (he gets on the bike, riding it
in a very crooked line towards the pub.)
Andrew: (comes up behind Peter, watching the action) Bet he falls off before
he's half way there.
Peter: I'll not take that bet.
(fade to the pub, Assumpta is opening gifts. we hear a knock at the door,
Niamh gets up to answer it.)
Niamh: Padraig, Peter's party is at Brendan's.
Padraig: I know. I need to see Assumpta.
Niamh: You can't just barge in here. It's women only!
Padraig: (staggering past her) Assumpta!
Assumpta: (very cold) Private party, Padraig, the pub's closed.
Padraig: I need to talk to you. I wouldn't refuse a drink, but that's
not what I came for.
Assumpta: (sighs, as she walks over to him) What is is Padraig?
Padraig: I'm sorry. (puts his arm around her as he stumbles closer) I'm
really sorry. It's not going to be the same here with out you. I don't care
what happens to the pub. What are we going to do without you?
Assumpta: (here coldness has disappeared) Ah, Padraig, you'll get along
just fine. You'll come visit, and we'll come back for visits. It's not like
you'll never see me again.
(Fade out, Assumpta in Niamh's spare room, getting in bed. there's a tapping
on the window, she gets up and looks out, sees Peter, he's quite drunk, opens
the window)
Peter: Ssumpta! I want to come in and sleep with you.
Assumpta: Niamh will hear you, keep your voice down! You can't sleep here.
(Michael and Andrew come across the street to collect their brother)
Michael: Sorry. He got away from us. (to Peter) Come on now, you can see
her tomorrow.
Peter: But I want to sleep here. (they drag him across to the pub, wave
at Assumpta as they go)
(Assumpta, laughing, closes the window and goes to bed)
(fade out, Saturday morning. Assumpta is getting dressed, Niamh helping
her with her gown. Fade to Peter standing by the river in his tux, waiting
for her, Fade to Assumpta getting out of Ambrose's Guarda car, walking down
to the river with Niamh holding the hem of her dress up.)
Aiden: (smiles at them both) It's been a long and difficult journey to get
to this day. I know you have chosen well. If two people are meant together,
no force on earth will keep them apart...(fade out to the members of the town
that have come out to witness this day. Niamh catches Ambrose's eye and smiles,
Brendan looks around and spots Siobhan, gives her a look that conveys more
than he intends, fade back to Peter and Assumpta, he turns her Claddagh so
that the point of the heart faces her wrist on her left hand, symbolizing
that she is now married, she in turn places a gold band on his finger)
Aiden: You may kiss the bride.
( as they kiss, fade out to Fitzgerald's, the reception is in full swing,
Fr. Mac walks over to the couple)
Fr. Mac: Take good care of her Peter. She deserves no less. (To a very shocked
Assumpta) You make him happy, Assumpta. (laughs) Assumpta Fitzgerald fell
in love with a Catholic priest! I never thought I'd say that! (shakes his
head and walks away, still laughing)
(fade to the next morning, Peter and Assumpta loading the van with all the
wedding gifts, Siobhan, Brendan, Padraig, Niamh, Ambrose, Michael, Andrew
and Dr. Ryan all arrive to see them off. They drive away as the credits roll.)
